Gulfstream Aerospace last week marked the service entry of the 500th Gulfstream outfitted with the manufacturer’s enhanced vision system (EVS). This milestone was reached eight years after the Savannah, Ga.-based company began offering the flight-deck safety technology to large-cabin Gulfstream operators.
The Gulfstream GIV and GV fleets recently achieved significant flight-hour milestones, with both airplane fleets logging more than 4.6 million hours combined. The GIV series–which includes 669 G450s, G350s, G400s, G300s, GIVs and GIV-SPs–surpassed the 3.5 million-hour mark some 22 years after the first GIV entered service on June 8, 1987.

FlightSafety International has commissioned the first Gulfstream G450/550 simulator equipped with the synthetic vision-primary flight display (SV-PFD). Specific additional training in the use of SV-PFD (which overlays a computer-generated view of the outside world on the flight displays) isn’t required by the FAA, but pilots have been asking for the chance to become familiar with the technology in the simulator.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has approved Gulfstream’s London Luton Service Center to perform maintenance on EASA-registered Gulfstream G150s.
The amended certificate means the maintenance facility can now provide comprehensive service for the Gulfstream G550, G500, G450, G350, G200, G150, G400 and G300 as well as the GV, GIV-SP, GIV, GIII and GII.
Overhauling the cryogenically cooled enhanced-vision system (EVS) installed in many newer Gulfstreams will set an operator back around $30,000–a cost many operators apparently didn’t realize they would be incurring. What’s worse, the overhaul interval for the delicate Kollsman infrared camera system spans just three years/1,500 hours. But this story, it would seem, has a happy ending.

Gulfstream said it has completed a full future air navigation system (Fans) flight across the Atlantic Ocean using controller-pilot datalink communication with automatic dependent surveillance (CPDLC/ADS).
The flight was the first of its kind for a purpose-built business jet. The CPDLC/ADS datalink provides flight crews with direct communication to oceanic and remote-area air traffic controllers.
Despite facing the gravest economic slowdown in decades, officials for Gulfstream Aerospace (Chalet No. 24) say they remain optimistic about the long-term health of business aviation and point to the Middle East market as an enduring bright spot.
