Gulfstream III, Farmingdale, N.Y., March 10, 2010–Soon after takeoff from Republic Airport (FRG), while climbing through 35,000 msl en route to Stuart, Fla., the crew of the GIII reported hearing a sound similar to a compressor stall, followed by a loss of power on the right engine. The pilot-in-command declared an emergency and initiated an in-flight engine shutdown.
Orders for the Safe Flight AutoPower automatic throttle for the Challenger 604 have reached 120, the White Plains, N.Y. company announced here at NBAA ’02. The system, which delivers synchronized thrust management from takeoff to touchdown, was introduced to the business aviation community at the 1998 NBAA Convention.
Weather, fuel and a curfew were clearly on the minds of pilot Robert Frisbie and copilot Peter Kowalczyk when they took off in a Gulfstream III from LAX for Aspen, Colo., in the late afternoon of March 29. Less than two hours later, the pilots, flight attendant and all 15 passengers were killed when the jet descended into terrain less than half a mile from the airport.
EVASWorldwide, an affiliate of Ramsey, N.J.-based Aircraft Services Group, said its $11,000 Emergency Vision Assurance System (EVAS) personal cockpit smoke-displacement unit has just received certification for use in the Gulfstream III and GV. The company expects STCs to be awarded “any day now” for EVAS use in the BBJ and Challenger. Approvals for the Falcon 50, Beechjet, King Air series and Global Express are also in the works.
Fort Lauderdale-based Banyan Air Service has expanded its refurbishment service into larger aircraft and recently completed installation of an Audio International in-flight entertainment system in a Gulfstream IV-SP and a Collins Tailwind 550 multi-region satellite-direct television and high-speed Internet package with cabin wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi) in a privately owned Boeing 747SP.
Gulfstream Aerospace received FAA approval of an aircraft service change (ASC) for the Gulfstream II fuselage, effectively extending the life of the airframe from 20,000 to 36,000 flight hours. Life-extension work on the Gulfstreams, consisting primarily of inspections, will initially be done at Gulfstream’s main Savannah, Ga. facility but will eventually be expanded to other sites.
The NTSB’s recently released factual report on the fatal crash of a chartered Gulfstream III at Aspen (Colo.) Airport (ASE) last March 29 does not provide a determination of cause.
Total Aircraft Services (Booth No. 6151) of Van Nuys, Calif., has completed a radar pod for a Gulfstream III operated by NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. An Earth Science Capabilities Demonstration project, the unmanned air vehicle synthetic aperture radar (UAVSAR) is jointly supported by NASA-Dryden and NASA-Jet–Propulsion Laboratory.
Universal Avionics has obtained supplemental type certification (STC) for its EFI-890R display retrofit in a Gulfstream III. IFR Avionics of Van Nuys, Calif., finished fitting the airplane in late June with four 8- by 9-inch flight displays, Vision 1 synthetic-vision system and an application server hosting Jeppesen electronic charts.
