Dr. Burkhard Andrich, currently senior vice president of aircraft component services at Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg, will take over as president and CEO of Manila-based Lufthansa Technik Philippines. The joint venture with Philippine aviation service provider MacroAsia has a staff of 2,700 and offers MRO services focusing on base maintenance checks for Airbus aircraft. Andrich studied mechanical engineering and completed his education with a doctoral degree. He has been at Lufthansa Technik since 1992.
Lufthansa Technik is seeking and training new technicians. Recently 137 students began either traditional or dual-study training programs at Lufthansa Technik Group sites in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Alzey, Munich and Arnstadt. The new class brings to 668 the total number of young people at Lufthansa Technik on their way to professions in technical aircraft services.
The European Business Aviation Association has commissioned a study into “illegal flights in business aviation.” The research is being conducted by Hamburg, Germany-based Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and intelligence group Wingx Advance. They are conducting interviews with industry stakeholders to assess the extent and impact of illegal flights. The study is intended to clarify the exact nature of illegal flying (mainly in the charter sector) and how it affects the market and the bizav industry.
Lufthansa Technik has signed a two-year contract with an undisclosed VIP customer in Asia to provide comprehensive technical support for two Airbus ACJ319s, the Hamburg, Germany-based company announced today. The support contract extends from line maintenance to full provisioning with components and materials, including logistics, maintenance management and CAMO services. The company will provide maintenance support out of its worldwide service network.
Lufthansa Technik said today at ABACE that it is the market leader of narrowbody and widebody VIP completions for Asian customers, having outfitted 16 of 21 bizliners based in the region. “Asia has one of the highest growth rates for the VIP aircraft market,” according to Lufthansa Technik senior vice president of marketing and sales Walter Heerdt. In China alone, the Hamburg, Germany-based company has completed a dozen bizliners, with five outfitted narrowbodies delivered last year. Heerdt said Lufthansa Technik will hand over four more completed bizliners this year in China.

Hundreds of exhibitors at the Aircraft Interiors Expo, to be held in Hamburg, Germany from April 9 to 11, are from the business aviation sector. Among some 60 new exhibitors is Satcom Direct, a global satellite communications provider. Other exhibitors range from smaller suppliers such as U.S. window treatment specialist Lou Martin & Associates to heavyweights such as cabin completion and MRO provider Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg.
Lufthansa Technik has invested nearly $67 million in its new 161,500-sq-ft overhaul center for engines in Hamburg. The new facility will be staffed by about 700 employees, and capacity for overhauls rises from the present 320 to more than 400 engines per year. By commissioning the new facility, the company is making a significant contribution to securing the more than 2,000 engine maintenance jobs at the Hamburg site over the long term.
The change in ownership of the annual Aircraft Interiors Expo barely rated a blink as the 2008 event went off seamlessly from March 31 through April 2 in Hamburg, Germany.
Ownership of the show changed last year when long-time owner/organizer UKIP Media & Events sold the expo to Reed Exhibitions.
This year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo, the completions event held in Hamburg, Germany, for the past five years, opened to record crowds last month, and at the same time marked its last appearance under the United Kingdom International Press (UKIP) banner.
