The Farnborough International Airshow facilities will soon see almost £25 million in upgrades that Gerald Howarth, a UK Member of Parliament, said are a “real step-change forward that demonstrates a commitment to having the premier venue for airshows.” Announced yesterday here in Paris, the facilities upgrade will be done in two phases–the first of which includes building a permanent Chalet Row A and the latter of which involves erecting a permanent Hall 1.
The London-area Farnborough Airport has been capitalizing on the 2011 lifting of the number of movements it can receive annually. According to the dedicated business aviation gateway’s owner and operator TAG Aviation, traffic increased significantly during 2012, and not just because of the biennial Farnborough International airshow in July and last summer’s London Olympic Games.
TAG Aviation has introduced a new measure to manage noise at the UK’s Farnborough Airport. Since January 1, jet aircraft that do not meet the ICAO Chapter/Stage IV standard have been banned from using the airport. This noise standard is ICAO’s most stringent and quietest classification for jet aircraft. To ensure compliance, TAG requires approved noise certificates before permission can be granted to land or take off at the airport. Approximately 300 movements last year would not meet the new standard, it said.
TAG Aviation (Stand 475) is promoting its activities in Asia, Europe and the Middle East and reinforcing the claim that its Farnborough Airport facility, southwest of London, is “the leading business aviation gateway” to the city.
The 2012 Farnborough International Airshow will fly in the face of still-tough business conditions, according to organizers of the biennial event to be staged in the UK July 9 to 15. “The last two years have seen a very difficult economic environment, but 2012 is looking like it will be a really great show,” said Farnborough International chief executive Shaun Ormrod.
In November TAG Aviation will complete construction of a new three-bay hangar complex at the London-area Farnborough Airport. The new structure doubles available hangar space by adding 120,000 sq ft and also takes TAG’s total investment in the UK site well beyond $150 million.
Tag Aviation has appealed a local government ruling last month that blocked its application to increase annual movements at the London-area Farnborough Airport from 28,000 to 50,000. The central government’s Department for Communities and Local Government received the appeal on Monday and this will likely order a public inquiry to begin next year.
Probably more active here at Farnborough International 2006 than any other exhibitor is ATC Lasham (Hall 1/Stand B22), which handles all arriving and departing aircraft.
Many local residents who successfully opposed TAG Aviation’s application to increase the number of weekend and holiday movements at the UK’s Farnborough Airport are hypocrites, according to their local member of parliament, Gerald Howarth.
