Monolithic Constructors of Italy, Texas, has designed and built schools, churches and storage warehouses that double as hurricane/tornado shelters. The company claims its new-design hangars can withstand winds of greater than 150 mph.

Aircraft flying in to this month’s Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Ga., will have a new hangar/office complex at which to park. The new construction at Augusta Bush Field (AGS) increases total storage capacity at the FBO to 32,000 sq ft. Construction crews started work on the new 16,000-sq-ft hangar/office complex last spring and it opened for business early this year.
TAC Air, a division of the Truman Arnold Companies, held ceremonies to open its new hangar complex at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Conn., last month. The 20,000-sq-ft hangar/office complex has 6,200 sq ft of office space and a 33,000-sq-ft ramp with radiant heating extending 10 feet from the door. The new building gives TAC Air 70,000 sq ft of hangar floor area under roof.
Galaxy Aviation at Orlando (Fla.) International Airport (MCO) is planning construction of a new hangar/office complex. Plans call for a 25,000-sq-ft hangar with 5,000 sq ft of office/shop space. The $3 million facility has tenant space available and will complete customer offices and shops to suit. Galaxy Aviation also has facilities in Florida, including West Palm Beach, Stuart and Boca Raton (dba Boca Aviation).
Opened in 1997, Thunder Aviation at Spirit of St. Louis Airport (SUS) in Chesterfield, Mo., recently completed a 39,000-sq-ft storage hangar. The new hangar includes 9,000 sq ft of office space that can be tailored to the needs of tenants. With the new addition, the FBO now has more than 100,000 sq ft under roof. Thunder offers maintenance and avionics service to aircraft of all sizes, as well as hangar storage for based corporate customers.
Columbia Aircraft Services expects to break ground this month on a new 20,000-sq-ft storage hangar at its Groton, Conn. (GON) facility. “We have commitments for all the space. It’s already full,” Columbia founder and president Art Maurice told AIN. Later this year, the maintenance, avionics and sales specialist plans to begin construction on a new 5,000-sq-ft terminal building.
Million Air at Salt Lake City International Airport was scheduled to have completed last month 30,000 sq ft of additional heated hangar space for business aircraft. Combined with pre-existing hangars, the new structure will provide Million Air SLC’s tenants and transient customers with a total heated hangar space of 170,000 sq ft.
Wilson Air Center at Memphis International Airport (MEM), Tenn., has signed an agreement with The Hangar to provide maintenance on site. The Hangar is now operating a satellite base from a 16,000-sq-ft building on the Wilson leasehold. With a larger shop at Batesville, Miss., The Hangar is an FAR Part 145-certified repair station with class III airframe and limited engine ratings.
The airport board and some users at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio, are at odds over a higher aircraft weight limit proposed late last year. A city council airport advisory board voted seven-to-one to raise the weight limit from 70,000 pounds mtow to 100,000 pounds and to keep the limit in place for 10 years. City-owned Lunken currently has some 130,000 operations per year and no scheduled airline service.
After transferring its FBO operations to Atlantic Aviation, Ranger Jet Center at Orlando/Kissimmee Gateway Airport began building its new business center with offices and hangar space available to operators and businesses. In November, Ranger Jet Center held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Osceola Sheriff’s aviation facility. The event also acknowledged two newly finished general aviation hangars.
