When it first opened at Waterbury-Oxford Airport, Conn., 20 years ago, Keystone Aviation consisted of one 15,000-sq-ft hangar and a passenger terminal. Today, this award-winning FBO has become one of Connecticut’s largest corporate jet complexes, with more than 130,000 sq ft of hangar space, 60,000 sq ft of office space and a newly renovated passenger terminal.
A fire last month destroyed a hangar and the two Beech 1900D twin-turboprops inside at Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island, Neb. The hangar was leased by Cheyenne, Wyo.-based commuter airline Great Lakes Aviation. Construction of a new bifold hangar door was under way when the fire started.
Two San Francisco-area airports are growing, with new FBOs and hangars under construction. At Buchanan Field in Concord, an FBO called Concord Jet Center is building a facility on 5.5 acres on the west side of the airport. Another company, Seecon, has begun construction of an office/hangar complex, also on the west side.

Visitors to Pueblo Memorial Airport on the eastern edge of the Colorado Rockies can look forward to major infrastructure improvements. The projects include new ramp space and taxiways as well as all utilities for a 22,500-sq-ft hangar with 4,000 sq ft of connected office space. The hangar facility, capable of accommodating aircraft as large as a Boeing 737, is already available for occupancy. According to the Pueblo Economic Development Corp.
The city of Livermore, Calif., is preparing to give up its exclusive fueling operation at Livermore Municipal Airport, having awarded a contract to Livermore Air Center to build a new FBO and hangars at the airport. A local group called Livermore Airport Citizens Group is opposing the move, claiming that the airport is going to become a “jetport” and add noise and pollution to the surrounding community.
A new 50,500-sq-ft hangar complex opened at Cutter Aviation’s Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) FBO. The three-unit complex can accommodate airplanes as large as the Bombardier Global Express and offers corporate aviation amenities such as office and shop space, private covered parking, catering kitchen, conference room and full security system.
Westchester County Airport (HPN) in White Plains, N.Y., has a unique culture. Waiting in line for takeoff, you might be sharing the crowded taxiway with a regional airliner or two, a corporate turboprop, some ultra-long-range business jets, several smaller turbofans and a Cherokee or Cessna single.
Miami Executive Aviation celebrated the groundbreaking for a new hangar at Opa Locka Executive Airport in Miami on May 23. The new 70,000-sq-ft hangar, set to open in the fourth quarter, will be large enough for Boeing Business Jets or Airbus A319s and will include office space, conference rooms and shop space.
FalconTrust Air at Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport in Miami, is preparing to build a 34,320-sq-ft storage hangar next to its FBO. Groundbreaking should take place in October. FalconTrust Air has also secured 18 additional acres at Tamiami Airport and plans to build 11 more executive hangars on that land.
