To prevent damage to aircraft as they are moved in hangars, charter and aircraft management provider Talon Air, based at Republic Airport on New York’s Long Island, has installed in two of its hangars a new Optex Redscan laser-scan perimeter-detection system that will warn pilots and hangar personnel when part of an aircraft comes within eight feet of the walls.
Summit Aviation of Middletown, Del., recently dedicated a new 78,000-sq-ft expansion that includes a 37,400-sq-ft hangar, 9,200-sq-ft paint facility, two cold storage units and an additional 11,400 sq ft of support and office space. It joins an existing 160,000-sq-ft facility located on the MRO’s 550-acre compound. The new hangar is designed to work on the CH-47 and V-22.
Heritage Aviation increased the size of its FBO facility at Burlington International Airport at the end of June when it acquired the former Atlantic Aviation facility there. Included in the purchase was an FBO terminal, fuel farm and three 15,000-sq-ft hangars, taking the service provider’s heated hangar space to nearly 100,000 sq ft.
The repercussions of last year’s collapse of the hangar complex at the Dulles Jet Center continue to roil and will for years to come, according to industry sources. On Feb. 6, 2010, the weight of accumulated snow caused the roofs of three of the four hangars to collapse, damaging or trapping 19 business aircraft. Insurance agents quickly descended on the scene to assess the situation.
Private FBO operator Gary Jet Center, the sole service provider at Gary/Chicago International Airport, has broken ground on a 40,000-sq-ft hangar that will eventually house its offices and FBO. The construction project involved the demolition of a pair of 1950s Quonset hangars to make room for the new structure, which is scheduled for completion next January and will bring the company’s total managed hangar space to more than 100,000 sq ft.
Lufthansa Technik has begun construction of a new maintenance hangar at the future Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). The Hamburg-based company is investing $23 million in the new hangar, which will be able to accommodate up to five short-haul and medium-haul aircraft or alternatively one widebody as large as an Airbus A340. Completion of the 72,000-sq-ft facility is anticipated to be in the first half of next year.
Trimec Aviation has partnered with Texas Jet at Fort Worth Meacham (FTW) to build a new maintenance facility that will double the size of Trimec’s current hangar capacity and triple the size of existing office space. As part of its $4.5 million development project at FTW, Texas Jet is nearing completion of a 30,000-sq-ft hangar it has leased to Trimec Aviation.
A nearly 20,000-sq-ft hangar is available at the Paradise Aviation Center located at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. Large enough to accommodate a BBJ or a pair of Gulfstream IVs along with a Falcon 50, the structure also includes another approximately 5,800 sq ft of office, lounge, restroom and dining space as well as a climate-controlled 12-car garage.
Belgium business aviation services group FlyingGroup (Stand 282) plans to open a new $3.5 million hangar at its Antwerp airport headquarters. The 56,000-sq-ft, frost-free facility will be able to accommodate almost every type of business jet. It will feature an automatic “carousel,” enabling parked business aircraft to be quickly moved indoors. The hangar is to be ready this summer.
As part of its $4.5 million development project at Fort Worth Meacham International Airport (FTW), Texas Jet is nearing completion of a 30,000-sq-ft hangar it has leased to Trimec Aviation. “With our growing Astra/G100 customer base, we have outgrown the facility we’ve been in for 25 years,” said Trimec president John Dunn. “The new hangar will also provide us with the option to move into Galaxy/G200 maintenance.
