Privately owned and operated Houston Executive Airport has added a second corporate hangar to its FBO facility. The 23,400-sq-ft hangar opened last year, and the airport now boasts more than 71,000 sq ft of hangar space, including T-hangars and the original 26,000-sq-ft FBO hangar. A Chevron Global fuel dealer, Houston Executive offers 24/7 fueling, rental and crew cars, crew lounge, catering and free wireless Internet access.
While heavy snowfall early last month limited aircraft operations at airports up and down the U.S. eastern seaboard, the Washington, D.C.-area airports were the hardest hit. Reagan National Airport recorded 17.8 inches of snow on February 5 and 6, while outlying areas saw more than two feet. Manassas (Va.) Regional Airport reported more than 30 inches and Dulles International, about 26 miles from downtown D.C.
Thom Harrow, former president of Volo Aviation, last year formed a new company called Airport Property Partners (APP) and in December purchased four Volo FBOs from Merrill Lynch. The four FBOs–in Fort Pierce and Sarasota, Fla.; Manassas, Va.; and Hayward, Calif.–will be rebranded as APP Jet Centers. Harrow expects new signage for the facilities to be in place by the end of next month.
Design/build firm Tectonic Management Group has completed three new facilities at Adams Field in Little Rock, Ark., including a new FBO facility for Supermarine and two new corporate hangar buildings. The new Supermarine FBO includes an 11,300-sq-ft terminal and office attached to a new 24,000-sq-ft hangar as well as a new fuel farm with two 25,000-gallon tanks and one 12,000-gallon tank.
Pewaukee, Wis.-based VJS Lincoln, a division of VJS Construction Services that specializes in aviation development and construction, recently completed construction on a new maintenance, repair and overhaul facility for Hawker Beechcraft. The 80,000-sq-ft facility is located at Indianapolis International Airport and features a maintenance hangar, shop and part storage area and administrative office.
After opening in temporary facilities in May, the new Hangar 10 FBO at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport in Kansas City, Mo., has entered the next phase of construction. Hangar 10’s phase II project includes building a new FBO terminal and the first of what will become three hangar bays encompassing 56,000 sq ft.
VJS Lincoln announced the recent completion of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility for Hawker Beechcraft at Indianapolis International Airport. The $14 million facility encompasses more than 75,000 sq ft of interior space, including a 40,000-sq-ft hangar.
Hurricane-strength winds destroyed three hangars at Salina Airport in Kansas on August 10, but luckily there were no aircraft in the hangars during the storm. Also affected were tractor trailers and construction barriers being used for a runway resurfacing job set for completion on August 19. “The storm set us back about a day,” said facilities manager Kenny Beiker, but he expected the job to be completed on time.
The National Fire Protection Association’s technical committee on airport facilities has dropped a proposed requirement for automatic sprinkler systems in Group III hangars. The revision to the NFPA 409 Standard on Aircraft Hangars is set to be submitted to the NFPA Standards Council for final approval, according to NATA, and included in the 2010 revision of NFPA 409.
Signature Flight Support’s Miami International Airport (MIA) base has a private hangar available, perfect for a large flight department, according to a company spokesman. The facility includes a 2,200-sq-ft departure lounge, 19,810-sq-ft hangar, covered parking and fuel discounts from the local and network Signature FBOs.
