Eurocopter and French aerospace research center Onera are jointly investigating how augmented reality, for the senses of vision and touch, could benefit helicopter pilots in the future. The two organizations are developing an advanced flight simulator, also known as a “neuro-ergonomic” platform, initially aimed at finding ways to avoid obstacles and terrain.
German aerospace research center DLR is testing sidesticks that provide force feedback and, on a more innovative note, touch cues to reduce crew workload. The pilot can feel stops or vibrations if the aircraft approaches a pre-defined limit.
Dassault Falcon (Booth No. 235) has created a “virtual reality room” that lets aircraft designers step into the digital creations they have crafted on their Catia design screens to make sure every detail is right before ever building the real thing.
Dassault is increasingly using tactile virtual reality (VR) to design its Falcon business jets. Haptic (from the Greek for sense of touch) interfaces, such as force-feedback arms, allow engineers to better check maintainability early in the design phase. Along with several partners, the French manufacturer (Booth No. 7514) is integrating these tools into its Catia v5 product lifecycle management (PLM) suite of software programs.
