Piedmont Aircraft last month launched as an aircraft sales company for pre-owned Beechcraft and Hawker aircraft. Industry veteran Tom Mekis is leading the company as president and CEO. Piedmont Aircraft has offices in Winston-Salem and Charlotte, N.C., and Leesburg, Va.

Hawker Beechcraft today reported increased orders, improved sales and higher earnings during the second quarter versus the same period last year. Net bookings for the quarter totaled $1.7 billion, resulting in a new record backlog of $7.4 billion. Second-quarter revenues increased by $327.6 million year-over-year to $1.02 billion, primarily due to the increase in aircraft deliveries.

One week after gaining full FAA type approval and production certification for the Hawker 4000, Hawker Beechcraft delivered the first copy of the super-midsize jet to customers Gary and Donna Hall during a ceremony on June 18 at the company’s headquarters in Wichita. Gary Hall currently operates a Hawker 800XP. The 4000 is the fourth Hawker Beechcraft airplane that he has owned and the first of two Hawker 4000s he ordered.

Hawker Beechcraft reported continued strong sales for its airplane offerings in the first quarter, though snags with the Hawker 4000 resulted in the Wichita aircraft manufacturer posting a $1.5 million loss for the period. “The loss was the consequence of an $18.4 million charge related to early production Hawker 4000 aircraft,” the company said.

There are now 23 Hawker 4000s in the completion pipeline as Hawker Beechcraft continues function and reliability testing, the last phase before the FAA will allow deliveries to proceed.

Hawker Beechcraft delivered 120 business airplanes in the fourth quarter, up from 94 aircraft shipped in the last quarter of 2006. The Wichita-based manufacturer delivered 319 business jets and turboprops last year, a 13.9-percent increase from the 280 business aircraft shipped in 2006.

Terrance Kelley has announced his resignation as president and COO of U.S. operations for Jet Aviation to pursue other opportunities. Theo Staub, v-p of strategic planning and business development at Jet Aviation’s European headquarters in Zurich, was named interim CEO until a permanent replacement can be found.

Raytheon Aircraft revealed five new executive appointments, the third reshuffling of senior manage-ment designed to improve the company’s business and customer support since James Schuster became chairman and CEO in mid-2001. The changes fall in the midst of a significant decrease in sales and deliveries.

Although the second quarter of this year raised the order backlog at Hawker Beechcraft to a company record $5.1 billion, roughly double what it was at the same time last year, the realities of purchasing Raytheon’s aircraft division led to an operating loss of $36.6 million. Sales for the second quarter were down 10 percent from last year to $701 million, despite the fact the manufacturer delivered two more aircraft in the same period.
