Honeywell Aerospace is gearing up for biofuel tests on its APUs and engines this summer in a bid to stay ahead of the alternative fuel push. The company plans to run a business jet engine and an airliner APU fueled by a mix of jatropha and algae oils from sister company UOP, which has blended various fuels for more than 100 years.

Honeywell launched the new TFE731-50 engine here in Orlando on Sunday evening, offering up to 4,900 lb of takeoff thrust and featuring integrated nacelle and thrust reverser systems. The new turbofan is set to achieve certification in 2004.

Honeywell Engines has adop-ted a pioneering role in the U.S. Army’s Small Heavy Fuel Engine (SHFE) development program, an advanced joint program started five years ago to develop and demonstrate turboshaft engines in the 700-shp class. The program has sought to achieve a number of lofty goals including a 20-percent reduction in specific fuel consumption, a 50-percent power-to-weight improvement and a 35-percent reduction of life-cycle costs.
