The FAA has revised the Houston Class B airspace to contain the operations of jetliners to the new runways recently activated at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport. The revisions, which involve expanding the lateral limits of areas B, C and D, go into effect on October 30. To help general aviation navigate the airspace, the FAA developed eight waypoints for the Houston terminal area.
Groundbreaking for the FBO at Houston’s newest airport, Houston Executive, took place on June 11. The FBO, Henriksen Jet Center, should be completed next year and will feature a two-story 48,000-sq-ft terminal building with a theater room and a 26,000-sq-ft hangar. Long-range plans also call for extending the existing 5,050-foot runway to 7,604 feet.
The FAA has determined that a proposed privately funded business aviation airport west of Houston is “objectionable” because it would create overlapping traffic patterns with existing airports, including some private strips and the Class B airspace surrounding George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Still, developer Ron Henriksen of Houston vowed last month to realign the 7,000-foot single runway to assuage the FAA’s concerns.
The second annual Super Bowl party and golf tournament held at Houston-based Wing Aviation raised more than $13,000 for the Wing Aviation/PAMA Scholarship Fund. The annual program is dedicated to helping fund one year’s tuition for a student attending Westwood College of Aviation Technology. More than 200 attended the party and 100 golfers participated in the golf tournament.
A Super Bowl Special Traffic Management Program (STMP) for the Houston area will be in effect January 28 through February 3, requiring all non-airline operators to obtain arrival and departure reservations for seven airports within the greater Houston area. Reservations can be obtained up to 72 hours before arrival and departure times.
Developers converting the former Air Rice Airport (78TX) near Katy, Texas, on Houston’s west side, to a business aviation facility now plan to call the airport Houston Executive instead of South Waller County, as announced last year. The new name “more accurately describes the location and purpose of the airport,” said Ron Henricksen of airport developer WCF.
Baseops International (Booth No. 710) reports that closure of its London Gatwick office and the absorption of its functions by the Houston, Texas headquarters has had no noticeable effect on the business of the company, now 76 employees strong. The UK office was dissolved last fall, but in this day of e-connectivity, customers have not noticed any change in service, Baseops president Jerry Scott told EBACE Convention News this week.
Arnoni Aviation of Houston has expanded its landing gear and accessory shops by moving them to a 25,000-sq-ft facility adjacent to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The new location includes more than 10,000 sq ft of environmentally controlled shop space. Planned expansion in Arnoni’s growing component overhaul services prompted the move.
After spending 14 years as a corporate pilot, Houston businessman Ron Henricksen announced plans for a business aviation airport on property he owns on the west side of the city. “If I don’t build an airport on the west side of Houston now, someday the taxpayers will have to do it,” said Henricksen. “I can build a prestigious business airport for less money than it would cost the government and I will not accept taxpayer money,” he asserted.
