The American Helicopter Society bestowed its Howard Hughes Award on Eurocopter’s experimental X3 hybrid demonstrator for helicopter technology improvement. The X3 has been in flight test since 2010 and has achieved 232 knots in level flight using 80 percent of available power. It is expected to arrive at American Eurocopter’s Grand Prairie, Texas campus on June 20 as part of its U.S. tour.

Clay Lacy will be honored by the Aero Club of Southern California with its Howard Hughes Memorial Award on February 8. Famed test and aerobatic pilot Bob Hoover will present the award in recognition of Lacy’s achievements spanning some six decades. An airline captain, experimental test pilot, air race champion, aviation record-setter, aerial cinematographer and entrepreneur, “Lacy has accumulated more hours flying jets than anyone on Earth and is widely credited with revolutionizing the business aviation and aerial photography industries,” the group noted.

After being purchased last year by American Airlines, TWA and its callsign ceased to exist, but not airplanes with its livery. Although all previous TWA flights are using American as their callsign, the airplanes still have TWA markings. The former TWA airplanes will be repainted in American colors, but the changeover is expected to take several years.

Congratulations to “the Henry Ford of helicopters,” Frank Robinson, who was presented with the Howard Hughes Memorial Award at a reception in Los Angeles recently. The 26th recipient of the award–a solid silver medal cast from ore extracted from Hughes’s Nevada mines–joins luminaries such as Jack Northrop, Jimmy Doolittle and Chuck Yeager on the list of honorees.

John Hall is the new president of Indianapolis-based Premier Jet Aviation. He was previously senior v-p of sales and marketing for CitationShares and was a founding member of the Cessna CitationJet division.

Eric Bachelet was named president and CEO of CFM International, the joint Snecma and General Electric company. Bachelet joined Snecma in 1971 and has held various positions with the Safran Group.
