This year’s keynote speaker at the 3rd annual Tampa Bay Aviation Association (TBAA) Safety Standdown is US Airways flight attendant Doreen Welsh, one of the cabin crew aboard Flight 1549 when it ditched in the frigid waters of the Hudson River in January 2009. Other presentations at the April 17 event will cover human factors and loss of control, as well as an introduction to the Tampa International Airport aircraft firefighting and rescue team. The event begins at 7:45 a.m.

The NTSB announced the promotion of John DeLisi to director of the agency’s office of aviation safety (OAS) today. He will assume his new position on June 2, following the retirement of current director Tom Haueter. DeLisi has bees the OAS’s deputy director since 2007.

On Tuesday, the NTSB opened a three-day hearing to focus on the January 15 ditching on New York’s Hudson River by an Airbus A320 operating as US Airways flight 1549 from La Guardia Airport. All 150 passengers and five crew escaped, though one flight attendant and four passengers were seriously injured.

The Smithsonian Institution has identified the bird remains found in both engines of the US Airways A320 that ditched into the Hudson River on January 15 as those of Canada Geese. The Smithsonian’s feather identification lab has so far examined 25 samples of bird remains and reached its conclusion through DNA analysis and through morphological comparisons with specimens in the museum’s collections.

A US Airways Airbus A320 carrying 150 passengers and five crew on board ditched into New York’s Hudson River late this afternoon and initial reports indicate that all the occupants escaped with their lives. Flight 1549 had taken off moments earlier from New York La Guardia Airport for a flight to Charlotte, N.C., when the A320 descended into the 35-degree F water near Manhattan’s 57th Street.

Million Air Albany has completed phase one of its renovation program at the facility. The upgrades cost $175,000 and include a new theater room, complimentary snack/beverage bar and snooze room plus remodeling of the flight-planning room, pilots’ lounge, conference room and lobby with new furniture, granite counter tops, carpeting and artwork. The second phase, mostly ramp renovations, should be completed this month.

Former Flight Options pilot Franklin Rodriguez last month was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison after pleading guilty last May to smuggling into the U.S. some 200,000 Ecstasy pills while flying a C-5 Galaxy mission from Germany to Stewart Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., for the Air National Guard.
