Miami-based Quiet Technologies Aerospace in late January received FAA approval of its Stage 3 translating-ejector hush kit for Gulfstream IIs, IIBs and IIIs.
Jet Aviation facilities in Geneva, Singapore, Teterboro, N.J., and West Palm Beach, Fla., have been appointed as authorized installation centers for Quiet Technology Aerospace’s hush kits in the Gulfstream II, IIB and III. The hush kits lower the aircraft’s noise signature below Stage 3 limits, weigh 234 pounds and require no modifications to the thrust reversers.
Jan. 1, 2006, is the date for the implementation of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Chapter 4 noise limits. The latest noise and emissions standards (European terminology uses “Chapter” to correspond with the U.S.
Really Quiet has doubled the warranty on its Stage 3 hush kit and thrust-reverser system for the Gulfstream II. The new warranty is two years, 1,000 hours or 500 cycles, whichever comes first. Really Quiet of Reston, Va., was the first of two companies to receive an STC for installation of hush kits on Spey-powered Gulfstreams.
FedEx has signed on to assist Really Quiet of Mojave, Calif., in the production, parts management and customer service of the latter company’s Stage 3 translating ejector hush kit for Gulfstream IIs and IIIs. FedEx developed a Stage 3 solution for its own fleet of Boeing 727s, with more than 730 shipsets delivered to date.
At its triennial meeting in Montreal in early October, the ICAO Assembly–which includes representatives from all 187 ICAO member nations–approved a more flexible approach to the application of aircraft noise regulations.
Quiet Technology of Miami last month expected to begin flying a Gulfstream II equipped with the company’s first FAA-conforming Stage 3 hush kit. The flight-test program is expected to be wrapped up this month and an STC is expected late next month or in early August. “The hush kit adds about 220 pounds, with no reduction in cruise speed,” Quiet Technology told AIN.
As of June 28, operators of Stage 2 aircraft with an mtow of less than 75,000 pounds are prohibited from using Jackson Hole Airport, Wyo. Willful violations of the ban are punishable by a fine of up to $750 and possible imprisonment of up to one year per violation.
Stage III Technologies, which received an STC two years ago this month for its hush kit for Gulfstream IIs and IIIs, plans to have its long-awaited first installation under way in August at Western Jet in Van Nuys, Calif. The kit, which pairs a mixer nozzle with an ejector shroud, yields a 50-percent reduction in noise, according to the company. A thrust reverser that the company says is good for 10,000 cycles is also included.
LaJolla, Calif.-based Stage III Technologies, which in December received an STC for its Stage 3 hush kit for the Gulfstream IISP, expects to receive by the end of summer certification for installation of its kit on the GIII, GIIB and GII, including Stage 1 GIIs. Unlike the already certified systems offered by Really Quiet and Quiet Technology Aerospace, the Stage III system has no moving parts.
