Under threat of another volcano erupting in Iceland, Eurocontrol said it is better prepared to deal with air travel disruptions caused by volcanic ash than it was in 2010 when the Eyjafjallajökull eruption grounded flights across Europe.
The European Regions Airline Association, which represents 70 intra-European airlines, has welcomed the “modest sign of gradual recovery” from the global recession. But the effect of airspace closures following the Icelandic volcanic eruption in April offset apparently strong underlying growth in European regional air travel in the year’s first half.
European Regions Airline Association member airlines expressed “outrage” at the failure of national governments in the region to compensate them for costs incurred in reimbursing passengers for flight cancellations following the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull in April.
The near catastrophic collapse of leading Icelandic banks has forced Reykjavik-based executive charter operator Icejet to take refuge further south by basing four of its five Dornier 328Jets overseas. Two of the aircraft now reside at Oxford Airport in the UK–a 14-seat VIP Envoy model and a 19-seat corporate shuttle version. Another Envoy is based at Paris Le Bourget Airport and a third aircraft operates out of the Latvian capital Riga.
