Rockford Area Aerospace Network (Booth 4835) has come to the NBAA show seeking to attract more business aviation companies to join the growing aerospace cluster being formed around the northern Illinois city. Already some 250 aviation and aerospace firms have facilities in the Rockford region, which is about 60 miles northwest of Chicago and close to the southern Wisconsin border. These include companies such as UTC Aerospace, GE Aviation, Esterline, AAR and B/E Aerospace.
A little more than a decade after former Mayor Richard Daley illegally destroyed Meigs Field lakefront airport, two new heliports are being constructed in Chicago less than two miles apart. Both are slated to open next summer.
Ten days after the Chicago air route traffic control center (ZAU) was shut down by a saboteur’s fire that badly damaged the facility’s infrastructure, business aviation operations seem to have recovered fairly well. According to the air traffic services team of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), bizav operations at Chicago-area satellite airports were moving well last week.
Two Chicago-area business aviation airports recently began major construction projects that will limit their availability.
Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) began weekend closures of Runway 16/34 on September 5, the first of five such closures running from Friday at 10 p.m. until Monday at 6 a.m. The closures, imposed to allow installation of an engineered material arresting system, will switch to nightly beginning the first weekend in October. The PWK Runway 16 ILS will be out of service until at least October 22, although an Rnav GPS Runway 16 procedure is available.
The Greater Rockford Airport Authority has reached an agreement with Chicago-based AAR to build a new hangar facility on the Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD). The 200,000-sq-ft MRO facility is expected to employ up to 500 people and expands RFD’s current service offerings and infrastructure.
Priester Aviation has been awarded both Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF) and Wyvern Wingman certification. The ACSF certification uses accredited, independent auditors to evaluate aircraft management and jet charter companies’ compliance and safety protocols. Priester Aviation, based at Chicago Executive Airport (KPWK), also carries an Argus Platinum rating, as well as IS-BAO certification.
The Greater Rockford (Ill.) Airport Authority (GRAA) and Rock Valley College (RVC) broke ground on a new RVC Aviation Maintenance Technology Program site. The 40,000-sq-ft facility, which will be located on the grounds of Chicago Rockford International Airport, will house the RVC educational course of study for aeronautical maintenance and repair and will allow RVC to expand and enhance its current program. Rockford is a major center of aerospace activity, with more than 200 aerospace suppliers operating in the region.
Though not often mentioned among aerospace centers of excellence, Rockford, Illinois, home to five major tier 1 aerospace suppliers, deserves a top spot on the list, according to the Rockford Area Aerospace Network (RAAN). The organization is making that case here at the Farnborough Airshow and points out that every single airplane flying today contains at least one part manufactured in Rockford, according to RAAN (Hall 2 Stand 23).
Hawthorne Global Aviation Services recently opened its newest FBO at Chicago Executive Airport. The FBO–the company’s third following new facilities at MacArthur Airport in Islip, N.Y., and Lakefront Airport in New Orleans–is part of an aggressive business plan to open executive FBOs throughout the U.S. in major and medium markets. “We have the next four sites in mind, and they will probably be online this year,” Bill Koch, chairman of the board, told AIN.
After two years, Chicago-area DuPage Airport has finished a $4.2 million upgrade of its FBO, which is open 24/7. Among the improvements to the facility–the lone provider at the airport–are new passenger entrances leading to an updated lobby with newly renovated restrooms, crew lounges and upgraded U.S. Customs facilities. Additions include a crew kitchen and dining lounge, theater room, fitness center with cardio workout equipment and weights, and a quiet room with sleeping accommodations.
