Bombardier Aerospace might well have secured its place in the Russian airline market during the Moscow Air Show (MAKS 2011) this week, when the country’s largest airplane lessors signed a memorandum of understanding covering up to 30 C Series jets.
India will join Russia in the development of a fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) as well as a multirole transport aircraft (MTA). At a meeting in Delhi, the defense ministers of both countries confirmed the projects, although India has not yet signed a draft $300 million preliminary design contract for the FGFA. The MTA agreement was signed last month, when Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.
Russian aircraft manufacturer Irkut signed a memorandum of understanding with Ilyushin Finance at Farnborough for the sale of 50 MC-21 airliners, Irkut’s first announced orders, albeit MOUs. MOUs don’t strictly count until they become firm orders backed by substantial deposits, but it’s a start. Before the airshow, Irkut reported only interest from Russian and Western airlines.
Leasing company Ilyushin Finance yesterday did a deal to supply up to 45 airliners to Russian airline Atlant-Soyuz. The memorandum of understanding, signed here in Paris yesterday and worth up to $1.2 billion, is with United Aircraft Company for 30 Antonov An-148 regional airliners and 15 Tupolev Tu-204 medium-haul jets. The lease contract itself should be concluded by September 1.
Irkut Corporation is evaluating tenders from Western engine, avionics and systems suppliers for its proposed new MC-21 family of narrowbody airliners. The Russian airframer (Hall 4 Stand C114) wants the first of the new model to enter service in 2016, and it intends to offer variants with capacity of 150, 180 and 210 seats.
AVPK Sukhoi’s ambition to use U.S.-built avionics on the Russian Regional Jet appear dashed due to an apparent lack of interest on the part of both Honeywell and Rockwell Collins. Honeywell, developer of the Primus Epic avionics software implicated in the certification delay of the Embraer 170, simply failed to respond to Sukhoi’s request for proposals, according to the Russian company.
Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) president Alexey Fedorov yesterday gave details of his plans here for expanding the company’s civil business from 10 percent to 20 percent in 2015, and then to 50 percent in 2025. The MS-21, a 150- to 210-seater, should prove instrumental.
A day before the opening of last month’s Moscow airshow, Sukhoi, Ilyushin and Boeing signed a series of agreements on the regional jet program proposed in mid-April during Boeing CEO Phil Condit’s visit to Moscow. Dubbed the “Russian Regional Jet” (RRJ), the program is aimed at building a prototype in 2004, certification in 2005 and service entry in 2006 or 2007.
Volga-Dnepr (Hall 4 Stand E16) and Ilyushin Interstate Aviation signed a general agreement here Monday for three firm orders and 10 options for IL-76TD-90VD freighters. A firm contract is to be signed by the end of July with first delivery following within 15 months.
Russia’s new airframing consortium OAK has won government approval to continue limited production of widebody airliners. This covers assembly of 15 Ilyushin Il-96s in the 2008 to 2012 time frame, allowing the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (VASO) to maintain annual production rates of three aircraft.
