Heli-Expo 2014 brings big news for Idaho-based Aviation Specialties Unlimited (Booth No. 802). On the heels of its announcement that the company has completed its 800th night vision cockpit modification, including exterior high intensity LED navigation lights and aft cabin lighting just before the show (an AW139 for Construction Helicopters), it also announced that it has a new v-p and chief technology officer, Dr. Joseph Estrera.
Revue Thommen’s HSL 1600 searchlight has been selected by Sikorsky for outfitting on S-92 helicopters configured for search-and-rescue (SAR) missions. The HSL 1600 features an integrated IR-filter and laser pointer and a detection range exceeding 1,600 meters.
Brazil’s Embraer announced several “product enhancements” to its midsize Legacy 500 and “mid-light” Legacy 450 business jets at last week’s NBAA 2013 Convention in Las Vegas.
With the first prototype of the Legacy 450 due to fly by year-end, the manufacturer revealed that it has extended the fuselage of the jet by more than half a foot to provide six additional inches of cabin length. Embraer has also increased the range specification of the Legacy 450 from 2,300 to 2,500 nm with four passengers by increasing the aircraft’s full-fuel capacity.
Securaplane, part of the Meggitt family, is displaying its current line of airborne cameras and integrated ground security systems, along with prototypes of improved products at its NBAA booth (No. N4527).
Securaplane’s wireless-controlled cameras are easily retrofitable, according to Steffen Spell, vice president of sales, marketing and customer service for the Tucson, Ariz.-based company. In fact, the cameras still need wiring for power but they can tap into power wires already installed for wingtip and empennage lights, for example.
Aircraft departing from two U.S. airports have a quicker and more environmentally friendly option for de-icing than traditional glycol. At New York John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport and Wisconsin’s Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport (RHI), departing aircraft that require de-icing can roll into an open-ended hangar where targeted infrared (IR) waves remove frost, snow and ice with a minimum of glycol usage, increasing aircraft throughput and decreasing de-icing time and cost.
Flight Display Systems has provided a custom 20-inch flip-up monitor to NASA for its Boeing 747SP, which is taking part in the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (Sofia) research program. The display is intended to monitor infrared emissions from space as part of Sofia, which is funded jointly by NASA and the German Aerospace Center. The centerpiece of the research is a 2.5-meter-diameter telescope mounted in the 747SP.
Flir Systems is introducing its new Star Safire family of high-definition cameras that it says will mean operators no longer having to compromise on performance because their aircraft cannot carry larger, heavier equipment. The new range of camera gimbals use common mounting hardware and cabling and, according to the U.S. manufacturer, weigh barely half of other systems (less than 50 pounds versus around 100 pounds).
L-3 Cincinnati Electronics says that its new NightWarrior 640 mid-wave infrared imaging system is a major technical advance. Designed for carriage by unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and other small applications, the camera is five times smaller and lighter than previous MWIR systems, and draws four times less power, according to the maker.
