Satellite communications capabilities on board commercial aircraft have advanced rapidly in recent years with airline passengers using broadband Internet, WiFi, text messaging and mobile phones in flight and now business aircraft users are starting to reap the rewards.
Satcom Direct (Booth No. 683) now offers services via Inmarsat, Iridium and ViaSat (which provides a Ku-band broadband service called “Yonder” from leased satellite capacity, although it is planning to have its own satellites). The company’s relationship with ViaSat means it will compete with the Arinc SKYLink/Rockwell Collins exchange system, now installed in some 80 business aircraft.
Satcom Direct last month became a distribution partner for Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband service, giving the Melbourne, Fla. satcom data reseller access to live troubleshooting and diagnostic information. The designation will help Satcom Direct engineers alleviate congestion and other network issues for business jet customers flying anywhere in the world.

ViaSat today named Satcom Direct a reseller of its new Yonder Ku-band satellite broadband service for business jets. Based on ViaSat’s ArcLight technology and using a lightweight, 12-inch antenna, Yonder is capable of providing download speeds of up to 10 megabits per second in flight. The service is available over North America, the Caribbean, the North Atlantic, Europe, the North Pacific and the Arabian Gulf.
Inmarsat last month began repositioning its I-4 satellite constellation in an effort aimed at providing full global SwiftBroadband coverage and improving network performance. Moving the three I-4 satellites into new orbital slots 24,000 miles in space is a complicated task, but officials say the result will be worth the effort.
Satcom system maker TrueNorth Avionics last month introduced a two-channel airborne telephone system for the cabin called Simphone Prelude that is designed for installation in light jets and turboprops. It is based on Simphone equipment for large jets and features the company’s ClearCall technology, menu-driven handsets and all-digital architecture.
Sikorsky Aircraft has selected TrueNorth Avionics’ Simphone airborne telephone systems as OEM standard options on new S-76 series and S-92 helicopters. TrueNorth, exhibiting at Booth No. 1671, provides airmobile Iridium and Inmarsat voice, fax and data equipment for general aviation users.
With this summer’s acquisition of Sky Connect by parent EMS Technologies, EMS Satcom can now offer full worldwide satellite communication coverage. Sky Connect, which continues to operate from Takoma Park, Md., offers tracking, text messaging and telephone service for airborne, ground and marine applications over the Iridium satellite network.
