Inmarsat and OnAir have finalized a contract appointing OnAir as the initial aviation distribution partner for Global Xpress, a cabin communication system its developers describe as “the first global Ka-band network to provide in-flight broadband connectivity for the aeronautical market.” OnAir currently uses Inmarsat SwiftBroadband to provide the connectivity for Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir.

The FAA issued a supplemental type certificate to Banyan Air Service for installation of Honeywell’s Aspire 200LG Wi-Fi-enabled satcom system on the Gulfstream GII/III/IV. The system includes the Aspire 200LG Inmarsat SwiftBroadband satcom, optional CNX-200 cabin gateway and Honeywell Sky Connect dual-channel Iridium satcom. “The flexibility and scalable architecture of the Aspire system combined with data acceleration and Wi-Fi allows versatility within our STC to meet the needs of our clients,” said Brian Wilson, Banyan’s director of avionics.

Satellite communications equipment manufacturer Thrane & Thrane introduced its new flagship Aviation 700D at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) last month in Geneva.
The announcement follows parts manufacturer approval (PMA) from the FAA, allowing certification for use on all aircraft and permitting the Danish company to start worldwide shipment of the product.

West Star Aviation recently received FAA approval for a supplemental type certificate enabling Wi-Fi on Falcon 2000s and 2000EXs equipped with Pro Line 4 and Pro Line 21. The project was completed at the West Star Aviation East Alton, Ill. location. The True North Chorus was used for Iridium data via Wi-Fi, while the Inmarsat solution was provided via the EMS CNX-200 and Honeywell HD-710 swift broadband pipe. According to West Start Aviation, the STC is considered to be Wi-Fi tolerant, allowing for other manufacturers’ routers to be enabled.

Honeywell and Inmarsat have completed an exclusive agreement for Honeywell to develop onboard hardware to connect to Inmarsat’s Global Xpress high-speed satcom system. The Global Express agreement, said Carl Esposito, Honeywell Aerospace vice president of marketing and product management, “validates the strategy of [last year’s EMS Technologies] acquisition and the focus of global connectivity.”

Honeywell and Inmarsat announced completion of an exclusive agreement for Honeywell to develop onboard hardware for Inmarsat’s Global Xpress high-speed satcom system. Global Xpress will use three Ka-band Boeing 702 HP satellites to cover most of the world except remote polar regions with broadband connections of up to 5 Mbps uplink and 50 Mbps downlink. Airtime is expected to cost much less than current Ku-band satcom.

Plans for Rockwell Collins to introduce high-speed satcom using the Inmarsat Global Express Ka-band broadband system in 2014 have changed as the two companies “recently discontinued negotiations on an agreement to develop a joint global Ka broadband solution for the aviation industry,” according to Rockwell Collins. “Accordingly, Rockwell Collins is evaluating alternative broadband solutions as part of its continued commitment to provide comprehensive connectivity offerings.”

West Star Aviation has been awarded STC approval to install Wi-Fi on the Gulfstream V. The certification includes connectivity via Inmarsat Swift Broadband and the Aircell Gogo Biz networks using the Aircell CTR wireless router. According to Rick Brainard, v-p of sales, “The installation was completed on a West Coast-based Part 135-operated Gulfstream V. The operator is well known for providing global charter services, and the addition of providing both terrestrial and satellite-based broadband wirelessly will be attractive to its clients.”
