International Communications Group (Booth No. 4229) has partnered with Cobham to develop a bundled Iridium and Inmarsat SwiftBroadband satellite communications system called Sora that the companies claim is lighter, smaller and less expensive than a similar competing system made available earlier this year by Aircell and Thrane & Thrane.

Satellite communications services reseller Satcom Direct last month announced it has sent and received AFIS/Acars datalink messages over the Inmarsat I-4 satellite constellation, marking a first for a satcom service provider. The messages were broadcast from a Global Express using Satcom Direct’s FlightDeck Freedom service in collaboration with the SITA datalink network.

Inmarsat’s I-4 mobile broadband satellite constellation is finished and the first SwiftBroadband customers are enjoying data access at speeds faster and for lower cost than the previous generation of Swift64 service, so one would think the London-based company would have little information to share at its annual aeronautical conference, held last month in Vancouver.

The CMC Electronics CMA-2102SB high-gain satcom antenna has been certified on the A380 and A330/340. The new-generation antenna supports Inmarsat Aero-H+, Swift64 and SwiftBroadband services and is intended for installation atop the fuselage. Inmarsat mobile satellite service enables long-range, oceanic communications between pilots and controllers as well as e-mail, SMS messaging and phone-calling services for passengers on some airlines.

Esterline CMC Electronics (Hall 3 Stand D50) and Boeing have signed a contract to offer CMC’s multi-channel SwiftBroadBand compliant CMA-2102SB satcom high-gain antenna system for new Boeing 777s. The 2102SB recently received Inmarsat multi-channel SwiftBroadBand approval and Transport Canada appliance type approval. The device is the only top-mount Arinc 741 antenna to gain such approval.

European fractional ownership hopeful Jet Republic has selected Aircell’s SwiftBroadband satcom systems for its entire fleet of Learjets in a contract that eventually could cover 110 systems. The contract is the largest to date for gear designed to connect with the Inmarsat satellite data and voice communications service.
