Midcoast Aviation in St. Louis last month was busy installing the first Teledyne Iridium Units (TIU) in Challenger 604s operated by Boeing’s executive flight department. Designed for use with MagnaStar air-to-ground telephone systems, the TIU from Teledyne Controls allows buyers to use their existing MagnaStar handsets to place voice and data calls anywhere in the world.

Until the start of the new millennium, the business of monitoring helicopters as they flew over inhospitable expanses of land or water could be a haphazard affair, especially when the helicopter was out of radar or radio contact. Given the altitudes at which rotorcraft routinely fly, that accounts for a large proportion of airborne time and, as such, was something that many pilots preferred not to think about.

Cessna Aircraft has selected the AirCell Axxess satcom system as a factory option on the Citation X, Sovereign and XLS. Axxess, introduced at the NBAA Convention last month, is a multi-channel, wireless broadband-ready satcom system designed for midsize to large business jets. The standard Axxess system includes two Iridium satellite communications channels for voice and narrowband data services. Two more channels are available as an option.

Satellite communications service provider Satcom Direct (Booth No. 225) has introduced a new service called International Global One Number, or iGON, that allows customers to use “home country” telephone number prefixes when traveling. The service eliminates the need for customers who are based in Europe to dial a U.S.-prefix routing number when placing voice, fax or data calls.
