Imagine being a new aircraft manufacturer and having Gene Cernan and Bob Hoover check out your airplane in one day. It happened yesterday to Jim McCotter, president and CEO of Maverick Jets, at the Maverick booth (No. 3915) when the astronaut and the aerobatic pilot each tried out the pilot’s seat of the mockup of the sleek personal jet (there’s an airplane at Static Display No. 21, also).

Jim McCotter, president and CEO of Maverick Jets of Melbourne, Fla. (formerly McCotter Aviation), said a production jet is still in the works, but that all information about it is proprietary. “We don’t need investors so we have no need to release pre-sales or marketing information,” he told AIN. Furthermore, the MC 2400 designation used previously has been dropped, he said.

Maverick Jets has not had much public activity lately and didn’t exhibit at last year’s NBAA Convention as it has in the past.

A Maverick Leader kit twinjet, registered as N750TJ, crashed in Melbourne, Fla., on January 24, killing the kit manufacturer’s chief pilot, Jack Reed. According to Sandy Scott, Reed had been out sick the week before the accident, complained of a headache that day and was flying erratically just before the crash. An autopsy revealed coronary blockage.

Tbilisi Aircraft Manufacturing (TAM) of Tbilisi, Georgia, in the CIS, in early January terminated its agreement with Maverick Jets of Melbourne, Fla., to certify and manufacture the Maverick Jets Leader, a twin-engine, kit-built very light jet. After operating below the radar for several years, Maverick Jets, now headquartered in Jackson, Wyo., revealed it is working on a next-generation Maverick Leader called the SmartJet. The five-seat, twin-turbofan, all-composite SmartJet has a planned mtow of 4,160 pounds, an empty weight of 2,150 pounds, a normal cruise speed of 277 knots at 22,000 feet and a max range of 1,250 nm.
