The Australian-led Joint Agency Coordination Center at the heart of the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 said last week that 58 objects “inconsistent with the Indian Ocean seabed” had been located in an area not previously explored. The Malaysian government is bringing an underwater vehicle to the area at the end of September to aid in identifying the objects. MH370, a Boeing 777, disappeared March 8 with 239 people aboard.

The governments of Australia, Malaysia and China jointly announced that Australia has awarded a contract to a private company to continue the search of the southern Indian Ocean sea floor for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. The company plans to use two ships towing deep-water vehicles to conduct the search, which is expected to take up to 12 months.

The lead insurer for Malaysia Airlines war risk hull coverage, London-based Atrium Underwriting Group, has agreed to settle its share of the latest hull loss suffered by Malaysia Airlines. Western military intelligence suggests that separatists in eastern Ukraine shot down Flight MH17 as it flew at 33,000 feet over a region near Donetsk, killing all 298 on board.

A team of ICAO investigators is expected to be dispatched this week to assist in the search for what brought down Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine on July 17. The Ukraine government officially requested the Montreal aviation organization’s help on July 18. Under ICAO’s Annex 13, the country where the accident happens is primarily responsible for conducting the investigation, unless, as in this case, that country requests additional assistance.

The United Nations agency that coordinates the international use of radio frequency spectrum is joining with the government of Malaysia to hold an “expert dialogue” on the need for real-time monitoring of flight data exposed by the loss of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. The parties will conduct the invitation-only meeting in Kuala Lumpur on May 26-27.

Handling on average more than a million travelers a week and almost 1,000 aircraft movements a day, Singapore's Changi Airport is seeing record numbers of flights and passengers.

About 40 years after Singapore decided to build a new national airport at the former RAF Changi–initially anticipating requirements to accommodate 30 million passengers/year–the city state has seen a related decision also to reclaim land from the sea vindicated after traveller numbers reached 30 million in 2004, 40 million six years later and 50 million in 2012.

Two of the fastest growing airports in Southeast Asia plan to invest in new communications and navigational systems to cope with increasing air traffic. Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport (MMOT) said it will invest $212 million to build a new air traffic control center at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to replace the existing 20-year-old system at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, 15 miles outside the city. In Manila, officials have committed $1.1 million to replace malfunctioning 18-year-old Doppler omni-directional radio range and distance-measuring equipment at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) with a communication surveillance/air traffic management system.
