The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is said to be close to responding to an FAA request that it withdraw a June notice that seeks to impose a total ban on the “certification, manufacture, importation, sale or continued use” of 121.5-MHz emergency locator transmitters.

New 406-MHz emergency locator transmitters (ELT) from Emergency Beacon Corp. are at the New Rochelle, N.Y. company’s booth (No. 4074). Anticipating the February 2009 switch of search-and-rescue signal processing from 121.5 MHz to 406 MHz, Emergency Beacon is offering ELTs for both cabin/cockpit and aircraft tail installation.

France’s Kannad (Booth No. 4541) is unveiling its new 406AF automatic fixed emergency locator transmitter (ELT) here at NBAA’07. The compact device has been developed as a cost-effective option for operators of smaller business aircraft, and the whole package is priced at less than $1,000.

The FAA issued a notice last month reminding operators that satellite processing of distress signals from 121.5 and 243 MHz emergency locator transmitters is scheduled to end on Feb. 1, 2009. Operators will have to switch to ELTs operating at 406 MHz, which are more reliable and provide search-and-rescue agencies more complete information for detection by satellites.
