A UK inquest has convened to investigate the death of Steve Mills, chief fire officer at Cotswold Airport (EGBP) in western England. The jury heard testimony last week that confirmed the officer died when a five-foot cylinder of compressed gas exploded as he tried to remove it from an airport structure he was involved in rehabbing. According to testimony, other firefighters previously expressed concerns about safety precautions being taken during removal of the cylinders, but were later put at ease about the process by Mills. The chief was working alone when the cylinder exploded.
On June 22 NBAA and AOPA filed a formal notice of appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to block the DOT from “dismantling the Block Aircraft Registration Request (Barr) program.” They also established a fund to support the legal fight. The notice will be followed by a motion to prevent the DOT from making any changes to Barr while the court considers the appeal.
Now that a U.S. District Court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by NBAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) challenging a ban on Stage 2 jets at Florida’s Naples Municipal Airport, the airport is moving ahead to reinstate the ban as quickly as legally possible. To that end, the airport has notified the FAA that it intends to implement the ban effective next March 1, the earliest it can go into effect by law.
On December 10, after a three- week trial in Los Angeles Superior Court, a jury awarded pilot Doyle Baker nearly $64 million, in a lawsuit against aircraft management firm PrivatAir and three of its employees. Baker filed suit in July 2004, alleging that Privat-Air had fired him at age 62 due, in part, to age discrimination.
