For the second year in a row, the aviation unit of Florida’s Marion County Sheriff’s Office hosted a safety training session for law enforcement, emergency medical, firefighting and electronic newsgathering operations from around the state. The May 21 event drew more than 70 attendees from 23 different organizations and focused on the United States National Grid, combatting complacency and formation flying. During the training session attendees practiced joint search-and-rescue efforts by identifying coordinates using the national grid.

A rescue officer fell from a Bell HH-1H on July 22 during a search-and-rescue operation at 9.50 p.m. near Mount Charleston, Nev. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was operating the helicopter under Part 91 and was in the process of hoisting a stranded hiker off the side of a mountain at the time of the accident. Night VFR conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The rescue officer died in the accident; the hiker was rescued safely.

  Million Air Medford purchased competing FBO Jet Center Medford and now has 90 percent of the fuel market on the Oregon airport. An Air BP fuel dealer, Million Air Medford is a subsidiary of Superior Air. The FBO plans to renovate the former Jet Center property as well as add amenities such as catering, concierge services, red-carpet greetings, on-site notary service and video surveillance of ramps and parking lots.
