The system for monitoring aircraft noise at Boston Logan International Airport and Hanscom Field is being upgraded to provide near real-time flight-tracking data on the web to the public so they can use the technology to report aircraft noise complaints online. The system consists of 36 field monitors–30 in the communities around Logan Airport and six around Hanscom Field.
Logan International Airport
On June 27 construction concluded on an engineered materials arresting system (Emas) added to the new runway safety area (RSA) at the departure end of Boston Logan’s Runway 33L. The new crushable concrete system sits atop a 300-foot-wide concrete pier that extends nearly 500 feet into the water. The Emas itself covers an area 500 feet long and 170 feet wide.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched personnel to investigate a fire that broke out Monday morning in a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 parked at Boston Logan International Airport. The fire emanated from what an airport spokesman described as a compartment in the belly of the fuselage.
Boston Logan International Airport landing fees for larger jets are being reduced slightly. For FAR Part 25 aircraft, effective October 1, the new fees are $4.34 per 1,000 pounds of max landing weight, a two-cent drop and the lowest they have been since FY2008. According to Massport, the airport’s owner and operating authority, this modest decrease was made possible by “maintaining controls on spending, combined with a significant savings in financing costs from a recent bond offer.”
The Massachusetts Port Authority has begun a seven-month closure of Runway 15R/33L at Boston Logan International Airport for resurfacing and to complete Runway Safety Area (RSA) construction at the departure end of Runway 15R. Following daily closures this month, the runway will be completely closed starting about June 15 through late September, ending with daily closures again in October and November. The enhanced RSA will extend the existing Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) bed to a total of 500 feet.
Business aviation operators and tenants at Worcester Regional Airport in Massachusetts should begin to see long-awaited improvements after the Massachusetts Port Authority takes over ownership of the facility from the city of Worcester, targeted for July 1. Massport has been managing the airport, but as a non-owner it could not make enhancements or repairs.
At the request of airport authority Massport, Signature at Boston Logan Airport (BOS) relocated its aircraft parking area on August 10 from the south end of the ramp area to the north-side cargo area. Temporary buildings with telephones and computer terminals are being installed, but the existing Signature terminal is a 20-min van ride from the new parking area.
Made up primarily of operators at Hanscom Field (BED) outside Boston, a new local business aviation group has formed. According to NBAA regional representative Dean Saucier, the group has been active in dealing with local political and economic issues, as well as issues relating to ATC. Massport, the port authority that controls BED, also operates Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
Boston Logan International Airport finally has an FBO befitting the gateway to New England, after the June 21 grand opening of Signature Flight Support’s newest facility. Signature’s parent company, BBA Aviation, spent $13 million to build the new FBO, and part of the cost went to meeting “green” (environmentally friendly) standards required by the airport’s operator, Massport.
Since March, Boston-bound business travelers have enjoyed Logan International Airport’s first modern FBO in many years, the new Signature Flight Support facility, which held a grand-opening ceremony on June 22. The $13 million FBO was built to environmentally sound standards, and Signature is applying for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
