The world’s three leading airline alliances have signaled their unwillingness to relocate from London Heathrow Airport in the event that a government-appointed commission proposes the development of a second hub airport for the UK capital.

The European Commission approved the proposed merger of US Airways Group and American Airlines parent company AMR Corporation on Tuesday, eliminating one hurdle to the companies’ plan to create the world’s largest airline.
The UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch’s preliminary report on the May 24 incident involving a British Airways Airbus A319 at London Heathrow (LHR) appears to point to inadequate ground maintenance and pre-flight checking. In a special bulletin issued on May 31, the AAIB confirmed that the fan cowl doors on both engines had been left unlatched after maintenance. Just after liftoff, both engine cowlings separated from the aircraft, causing damage that eventually led to one engine fire and shutdown.
British Airways bid farewell to its three remaining Boeing 757s on Saturday, October 30, with a special farewell tour around the UK. To commemorate the day, the airline repainted one of the aircraft, G-CPET, in vintage BA livery from 1983. That airplane visited Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh during its final day in British Airways service from London Heathrow. The other two 757s flew from Heathrow on Spanish services.

Airbus has delivered the first of two A318 aircraft equipped with “steep approach” capability to British Airways, the manufacturer announced today. The A318 is the largest commercial aircraft certified to land at London City Airport (LCY), from where BA plans to launch transatlantic service to New York JFK Airport on September 29. This will be the first scheduled airline route from LCY to a destination outside of Europe.

They want to know why the airplane lost power on final approach to LHR. The 777, on a long-range flight from Beijing to London, touched down 1,000 feet short of the paved surface of LHR’s Runway 27L before coming to rest astride a taxiway junction near the threshold.
British Airways last month announced plans to create a business-class service from London City Airport (LCY) to New York via Shannon, Ireland. The airline was forced to incorporate a tech stop due to payload restrictions associated with LCY’s 3,934-foot-long runway. British Airways said it will acquire Airbus A318s configured with 32 business-class seats to operate the service.
