Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) wants the FAA to make the controversial North Shore helicopter route over Long Island permanent, albeit with a few changes. The offshore route became mandatory in 2012 but is scheduled to expire under a sunset provision on August 6 unless the FAA renews it.
Now air charter buyers can use their smartphones to grab the next available helicopter seat bound for the Hamptons. The new Blade app lets customers book a seat on an existing flight or charter a whole helicopter and then use the app to help fill the seats. The app is backed by New York City’s Liberty Helicopters. Flights booked on Blade take off from NYC’s East Side Heliport and land in South Hampton, East Hampton and Montauk, with return flights to Midtown’s West Side Heliport.

The super-midsize jets are based at Talon’s new 100,000-sq-ft hangar and office complex at New York’s Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Long Island. With nine Hawker 4000s on its charter certificate–nearly one-fifth of the in-service fleet of this type–Talon remains the largest owner and operator of these twinjets in the world.
Wilson Technological Center at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, N.Y., has received a Gulfstream II from JFI Jets owner and Long Island resident Arik Kislin. The retired aircraft, once owned by Frank Sinatra and more recently Harrison Ford, will serve as a training jet for students in the aviation maintenance technology program at Wilson Tech’s Republic Airport campus. “I love this airplane and truly hate to see her grounded, but after 44 years of service her time has come,” Kislin told AIN.
