In spring 2003, Million Air at Van Nuys Airport will break ground on a new $20 million, 250,000-sq-ft facility. The original plans, made a decade ago, were delayed when the 1994 Northridge earthquake hit and destroyed Million Air’s location in the original terminal building. From there until 1998, the FBO operated out of a doublewide trailer, when it moved into an office building in a terminal building.

Following the end of the comment period for the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena (Calif.) Airport Authority’s plan to impose a nighttime curfew on Bob Hope Airport, the authority plans soon to submit a formal application for the curfew to go forward. If Burbank’s proposal to impose a 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew is enacted, this would be the nation’s first imposition of curfew restrictions on Stage 3 jets.
Following a three-day trial without jury in mid-July, a federal district court judge in Southern California was set to decide a lawsuit filed by NBAA, the National Air Transportation Association, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and five other aviation entities challenging the legality of the so-called non-addition rule for Stage 2 jets at Van Nuys Airport (VNY).
Public comments released last month on an FAR Part 161 noise study at Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport (BUR) support a nighttime curfew (10 p.m. to 7 a.m.) on all aircraft operations except certain emergencies, military flights and those delayed for reasons beyond the control of the operator.
The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena (Calif.) airport authority met on March 17 to deliver a presentation on its application for a mandatory nighttime curfew at Bob Hope Airport, which would extend from 10 p.m. to 6:59 a.m., according to NBAA. After the presentation, an airport authority subcommittee will likely recommend that the airport commissioners adopt the curfew, said the association.
Signature Flight Support owner BBA Aviation announced that it is buying seven FBOs from Hawker Beechcraft, including a facility at busy and highly competitive Van Nuys Airport. The deal is valued at $128.5 million. BBA is buying HBC’s line and fuel operations in Atlanta; Houston and San Antonio; Indianapolis; Tampa, Fla.; Van Nuys, Calif.; and Wichita, but HBC is retaining its maintenance operations at those facilities.
Sentient Jet Holdings has continued its pattern of aggressive growth with the purchase of Van Nuys, Calif.-based The Air Group. While the terms of the deal were undisclosed, a source familiar with the transaction told AIN that the agreement will bring more than 20 additional aircraft under Sentient management, as well as increase Sentient’s visibility in the bustling Southern California market.
In a letter to the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority dated May 18 (but released only last month), the FAA concluded that the authority’s proposed curfew on all aircraft at Bob Hope Airport (BUR) in Burbank, Calif., “would not be consistent with the statutory requirements that a restriction be reasonable, nonarbitrary and nondiscriminatory.

• The Los Angeles board of airport commissioners has authorized airport staff members to begin advertising for qualified companies to perform Part 161 noise mitigation studies for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). The separate studies are not expected to be completed for three to five years.
