The day after the FAA held a meeting with more than 40 industry leaders to discuss runway safety, two jets–a Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet Boeing 737 and Northwest Airlines Airbus A320–nearly collided at Los Angeles International Airport.

The NTSB expressed disappointment last month over the FAA’s alleged foot-dragging on several safety recommendations, and the safety agency changed the classifications of the FAA’s responses from “acceptable” to “unacceptable.”
Van Nuys Airport, Calif., the busiest general aviation airfield in the world and already subject to a noise curfew applicable to Stage 2 and “noisier” Stage 3 airplanes, is now the target of an “attempt to implement multiple proposed noise and access restrictions,” according to Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the operating authority for VNY.
The FAA has scheduled several “fact finding” informal meetings to solicit information from operators and others concerning proposed revisions to Los Angeles Class B airspace. U.S. Customs and Border Protection opened a new office at Santa Maria Airport (SMX) on December 4, with operating hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Jim Kunkle, president of FBO Central Coast Jet Center, said that Santa Maria is a frequent launch point for business jet flights to Hawaii. The first customer to use the new customs service was a BBJ flying from Asia early last month.
In a November 7 response to a request by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), the DOT Inspector General’s office reviewed a recent series of ATC equipment outages in Southern California, as well as a problem with a runway-incursion alerting system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
No sooner had Landmark Aviation celebrated its refurbished Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) FBO and maintenance facility last Thursday, than it turned its eyes toward nearby Van Nuys Airport, where Landmark is seeking suitable property.
The FAA is trying to interview the pilot of a non-U.S. registered Gulfstream V involved in a Class A runway incursion at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on September 30. During the incident, a departing SkyWest Airlines CRJ700 stopped within about 100 feet of the Gulfstream, which was on the same runway. The Gulfstream then continued on its planned flight to Long Beach, according to an FAA spokesman.
NBAA has received reports of changes to customs clearance procedures at some airports for international general aviation aircraft arrivals. In Los Angeles, for the time being, aircraft that have heretofore cleared U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Van Nuys Airport, Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and Long Beach Airport must now clear customs at Los Angeles International Airport, according to a customs official.
The FAA has interviewed the pilots of a Gulfstream V that caused a runway incursion on September 30 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), during which a SkyWest Airlines CRJ700 braked to a stop reportedly within 100 feet of the GV. The CRJ didn’t suffer any damage, according to a SkyWest spokeswoman, but did have to cool its brakes for 15 minutes, delaying the flight by about half an hour.
