The General Assembly of the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) took place in Salzburg last week with a mixed picture of how airlines are managing, particularly with continued pressure from low-cost-carrier growth and regulatory burdens. In the ERA’s view, Europe has a major problem with central politicians who seem unable to understand the value of regional aviation that local politicians in its many outer regions have little problem appreciating.

Two pilots escaped injury on August 5 when their Flight Options Embraer Phenom 300 ran off the end of the runway and continued through a fence while landing at Flying Cloud Airport (KFCM) in a Minneapolis suburb. A local police report said the jet came to rest on the shoulder of a road just before 9 a.m. The Phenom had departed Pittsburgh at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time with only the two pilots aboard.

The UK’s BMI Regional signed a deal last month to supply an Embraer ERJ145–along with pilots, cabin crew and support–to Swedish regional airline Flyglinjen. Flyglinjen plans to replace a Fokker 50 turboprop on a route between Kristianstad, Sweden and Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The contract’s term extends 10 months, starting from August 12, using the Flyglinjen brand. Plans call for the airplane to operate under BMI Regional’s certificate using BMI Regional flight and maintenance crews, while Flyglinjen provides sales and ground services.

Pulkovo-3 FBO

Russia’s second largest city, St. Petersburg, has a new FBO and by year-end it should have a second. The Pulkovo-3 FBO at Pulkovo International Airport officially opened for business on March 6, initially handling only domestic flights. According to the purpose-built facility’s operator, JetPort SPb, it should be ready to handle international flights as soon as customs and immigration facilities are fully in place.

The effort toward returning the Boeing 787 to service enters a new phase this week as the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration digests a formal proposal issued last Friday during what the manufacturer characterized as a productive meeting between BCA president and CEO Ray Conner and FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. Neither Boeing nor the FAA would comment on the substance of the proposal, widely believed to center on a modification of the airplane’s lithium-ion batteries meant to prevent fire from spreading from one cell to another.

U.S. aviation authorities announced Friday that the Federal Aviation Administration will conduct “a comprehensive review” of all Boeing 787 “critical” systems following reports of a string of incidents involving the Dreamliner, most notably Monday’s fire within the aft electronics bay of a Japan Airlines airplane parked at Boston Logan Airport.

The loosely defined safety partnership entered by Boeing and Embraer in April yielded its first tangible results with Tuesday’s announcement that the two companies will collaborate on a new set of “tools” designed to reduce the incidence of runway excursions.
