Lufthansa has placed a new firm order for eight Embraer E195s for use within the Lufthansa Regional system, the Brazilian manufacturer announced last month. The deal raises the total number of Embraer E-Jets ordered by the German airline to 38.
Barely 10 days after Embraer’s E190 gained certification to fly the steep approach into London City Airport, Switzerland’s Baboo became the first airline to take advantage of the new capability when it flew one of its three 100-seaters between Geneva and the single-runway Stolport on February 10. The airplane replaced one of Baboo’s pair of Bombardier Q400s for the landmark flight.
German airline Air Berlin Group has signed an agreement under which Lufthansa Technik will provide comprehensive component support for its entire fleet. Lufthansa Technik will manage the supply of components for the airline’s Boeing 737s, Airbus A320s and A330s and Bombardier Q400s. Air Berlin will receive on-site service at its Berlin and Düsseldorf hubs.
When Lufthansa started offering executive jet flights through its subsidiary Lufthansa Private Jet in March 2005, the intention was to carry first-class passengers to and from its hub airports in Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich, providing a seamless connection with scheduled services. The airline was also offering point-to-point flights between some 1,000 European airports.
Rekkof Aircraft, the Dutch company trying to bring Fokker F70 and F100 twinjets back into production, has said the uncertain status of the Fairchild Dornier regional jets and the demise of BAE Systems’ Avro RJX program have boosted its prospects. The firm has now joined Embraer and Bombardier in the race to win an order for up to 60 regional jets from German regional operator Lufthansa CityLine.
During the ERA assembly held last month in Salzburg, Austria, Rockwell Collins announced FAA certification of its HGS 4200 head-up guidance system (HGS) for use on Bombardier’s CRJ700 and of the HGS 4100 for the Canadian airframer’s Dash 8Q-400. U.S. West Coast operator Horizon Air supported both certification programs. German CRJ700 operator Lufthansa CityLine and French regional Brit Air also chose the HGS 4200.
Lufthansa CityLine is looking at the Bombardier and Embraer regional jet families as alternatives to the firm order for sixty 728JETs that it had placed with airframer Fairchild Dornier. During the ERA assembly, the German regional’s managing director, Karl-Heinz Kopfle, said Bombardier’s CRJ700 and -900s are under consideration, as is the Embraer 170.
Bombardier Aerospace unveiled a series of updates to its CRJ900 regional jet during a June 5 event at the Signature Flight Support FBO at Washington Dulles International Airport. The 76-seat CRJ900 NextGen on display there became the first to enter revenue service on June 7, when Northwest Airlines subsidiary Mesaba Airlines flew it to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport from Minneapolis.
The board of Deutsche Lufthansa, Europe’s second-largest airline, has approved a $1.5 billion expenditure for 30 Embraer E190s and 15 Bombardier CRJ900s.
Lufthansa signed a firm order last month for 12 Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets. Once it accepts delivery, the German flag carrier plans to use the airplanes to replace 50-seat CRJ200s flown by Lufthansa CityLine. However, Lufthansa’s pilot union has yet to agree to a new scope clause that would allow the 86-seat jets within the CityLine fleet.
