German completion and MRO provider Lufthansa Technik has been selected to supply its networked integrated cabin equipment (Nice) system for Bombardier’s new, all-composite Learjet 85.
Lufthansa Technik (LHT) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Oman Air to create the maintenance specialist’s first joint venture in the Middle East, with plans for building a hangar at Muscat airport. Operations are expected to start in 2012, when the hangar will be able to accommodate two widebody and two narrowbody aircraft. Some 300 technicians are to work there.
Lufthansa Technik has opened a new aircraft maintenance and component services facility on the Italian airport Malpensa. Lufthansa Technik Milan (LTMIL) is offering component and planned maintenance services up to A checks, aircraft-on-ground support and troubleshooting.
The first Bombardier Global Express 8C check has been performed in Europe by Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services (LBAS), a joint venture of Lufthansa Technik, Bombardier and ExecuJet.
The work included dismantling the aircraft’s cabin, overhauling the landing gear and inspecting and modifying structures and systems. The Berlin-based MRO, which specializes in Bombardier business aircraft, completed the project in eight weeks.

Berlin-based LBAS, a joint venture among Lufthansa Technik, Bombardier and ExecuJet, has completed its first major overhaul event, an 8C check, on a Bombardier Global Express for an unidentified Spanish customer. The MRO completed the task in eight weeks. Equivalent to a D check for large commercial aircraft, the 8C check is the Global Express’s largest regular maintenance event and is required after 10 years of flight operations.

“There was always talk of the labor shortage in the MRO market of ‘Mr. Right Skills,’ a shortage so bad that we’d be grounding planes,” said David Stewart, a partner in forecasting group AeroStrategy. “First of all, we never grounded planes, so somehow our industry coped with the shortage. Second, we’re now into recession so it’s less of an issue.
