Lufthansa Technik has expanded its composite workshop at its airframe related components (ARC) facility in Hamburg, Germany, to handle repairs of large composite components. The company installed a new autoclave featuring a five-meter (16.3-foot) interior diameter, and this allows curing of the largest jet engine fairings, flaps and radomes using heat and pressure.

Lufthansa Technik (LHT) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Oman Air to create the maintenance specialist’s first joint venture in the Middle East, with plans for building a hangar at Muscat airport. Operations are expected to start in 2012, when the hangar will be able to accommodate two widebody and two narrowbody aircraft. Some 300 technicians are to work there.

Lufthansa Technik has opened a new aircraft maintenance and component services facility on the Italian airport Malpensa. Lufthansa Technik Milan (LTMIL) is offering component and planned maintenance services up to A checks, aircraft-on-ground support and troubleshooting.

The first Bombardier Global Express 8C check has been performed in Europe by Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services (LBAS), a joint venture of Lufthansa Technik, Bombardier and ExecuJet.

The work included dismantling the aircraft’s cabin, overhauling the landing gear and inspecting and modifying structures and systems. The Berlin-based MRO, which specializes in Bombardier business aircraft, completed the project in eight weeks.

In a ceremony here yesterday, Bombardier Aerospace and Lufthansa Technik cemented an agreement that will make the latter’s cabin management system standard on the Canadian OEM’s new, all-composite Learjet 85.

Berlin-based LBAS, a joint venture among Lufthansa Technik, Bombardier and ExecuJet, has completed its first major overhaul event, an 8C check, on a Bombardier Global Express for an unidentified Spanish customer. The MRO completed the task in eight weeks. Equivalent to a D check for large commercial aircraft, the 8C check is the Global Express’s largest regular maintenance event and is required after 10 years of flight operations.

The Lockheed L-1649A Starliner was the queen of the skies in the late 1950s and it might again become a familiar sight aloft, according to officials at Lufthansa Technik. In cooperation with the company’s Tulsa, Okla. subsidiary, BizJet, restoration on one of the 50-year-old propliners is under way at a specially built hangar at Auburn-Lewiston Airport in Maine.
