Yesterday Boeing delivered a Boeing Business Jet 747-8 with the first Greenpoint Technologies Aeroloft system, which provides an extra 393 sq ft of cabin space (for a total of 5,179 sq ft) via the addition of a loft area above the main cabin between the upper deck and tail. It was installed by Boeing Global Transport & Executive Systems in Wichita.
Lufthansa Technik Switzerland (LTSW) in Basel will undergo extensive restructuring to concentrate exclusively on line maintenance, light base maintenance and logistics services for its customers at Euro Airport. The company plans to reduce its 304-employee workforce to 82.
The Boeing 747-8 will achieve its pre-delivery guarantees on fuel burn “in a year or two,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Jim Albaugh told attendees at the company’s May 15 Investors’ Conference in St. Louis.
London-based Andrew Winch Designs is well on its way to establishing its brand in the aviation sector, having worked on 12 completions and two refurbishments in the past decade. The company will end the year with the delivery of an ACJ, A340 and a BBJ2 (based on the 737-800), said Jim Dixon, Andrew Winch’s director and head of the aviation design department, told AIN here at the show yesterday. The company also expects to deliver two more next year.
Lufthansa Technik has renewed its general agreement to provide interiors and finishing for Airbus VIP and executive jets, including the ACJ318. So far, the company has delivered 15 ACJ318 cabin completions from it facility in Hamburg, Germany, and two ACJ318s from its U.S. subsidiary, BizJet International, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Three more aircraft are scheduled for completion in Tulsa.
Idair (Stand 783), the joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and Panasonic Avionics, is debuting Eclipsair, its wireless “infotainment” system, here at EBACE. Aimed at the VIP and business jet markets, Eclipsair delivers news, video, audio data and flight information. The company anticipates it will be available for customer installations in the second quarter of 2013.
It is “challenging” selling BBJs in the present economic environment, Boeing Business Jets president Steve Taylor told reporters here in Geneva yesterday. Though the order book for this year is still open and looking for ink, Taylor was optimistic that negotiations begun at the 2012 ABACE show in Shanghai, China, in March would produce real orders before the year is out, if not at EBACE.
German flag carrier Lufthansa took delivery of the first 747-8 Intercontinental airliner from Boeing in ceremonial fashion on May 1, then flew the so-called “Queen of the Skies” from Everett, Wash., to its base in Frankfurt after a touch-and-go landing in Hamburg.
Airbus SAS and Lufthansa Technik have renewed their existing cooperation by signing a new support contract for the Airbus fleet of five A300-600ST Belugas. The first component supply contract for the Beluga fleet was signed in 1995. The new agreement is in effect until 2025. According to Airbus, the extension of the existing component supply contract reflects the increased utilization of the A300-600 ST fleet related to the A350 XWB production ramp-up.
Boeing signed over the first 747-8 Intercontinental passenger airliner to Lufthansa today, ahead of a May 1 flight to its Frankfurt base. The manufacturer has now delivered three Intercontinentals, including two VIP airplanes, and 14 freighter variants to another five customers.
