Boeing’s new Connexion satellite Internet service last month began operating in revenue passenger service aboard a Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 flying daily between Frankfurt, Germany, and Washington Dulles International Airport. The good news for passengers is that Lufthansa is offering the service free of charge for the duration of this initial three-month trial.

A persistently optimistic outlook was in evidence at the first Large Executive & VIP Aircraft Conference: Opening speaker Arnaud Martin, program director of corporate and VIP aircraft for Airbus, noted that while sales are suffering as a result of a depressed U.S. economy, “The market is still alive.” The event, held December 11 and 12 in Hamburg, Germany, attracted some 50 delegates.

Although plans to build Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport have been progressing more slowly than anticipated, Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services (LBAS) remains confident that the new facility will eventually be built on the grounds of the current Schönefeld Airport, giving the company a major boost in activities and a solid base for growth.

A 65,000-sq-ft business aviation terminal, ramp and hangar complex is being built at the UK’s Leeds Bradford International Airport in Yorkshire. The $13 million investment is being shared by the airport and current FBO and charter firm Multiflight. In addition to providing handling for business aircraft, Multiflight also intends to offer extensive line maintenance.

Exhibit space for Aircraft Interiors Expo 2008, held in Hamburg, Germany, “has virtually sold out,” according to event organizer Reed Exhibitions. A total of 560 exhibitors attended last year’s show and more than 11,700 visitors from 75 countries passed through the gates. While the primary focus of the show is commercial aviation, business aviation vendors account for large numbers of exhibitors.

Lufthansa Technik has signed a contract to do its first cabin completion on an executive version of the new Boeing 747-8. The four-engine airplane is scheduled to arrive at the company’s Hamburg, Germany completion center in early 2011 and will be delivered to the unidentified customer 18 months later.

Lufthansa is ordering its own business jets to replace those supplied thus far by NetJets Europe (NJE) for Lufthansa’s Private Jet service. The German-based carrier claims the success of the service makes a sound business case for buying the aircraft.
