Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) has opened a $30 million widebody hangar at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, joining two others at the site. The 91,500-sq-ft building has a 115-foot ceiling and has space for a widebody and a pair of narrowbodies to be worked on simultaneously.
Lufthansa Technik is now the sole owner of used aircraft spare parts supplier AirLiance Materials. The acquisition was completed when Lufthansa Technik acquired the shares previously held by minority owners United Airlines and Air Canada.

Lufthansa announced yesterday it will introduce its Lufthansa Private Jet service to the North American market on February 1 through an expanded relationship with fractional provider NetJets. The new service will build on the existing Lufthansa Private Jet service in Europe, which is done in conjunction with NetJets Europe.

Lufthansa Technik and NAS-Holding of Saudi Arabia are expanding their relationship. The scramble for precious slots at London Heathrow Airport has spurred a bidding war for struggling UK carrier BMI. Virgin Atlantic Airways has told Lufthansa, BMI’s owner, that it will be able to close the deal more quickly than the International Airlines Group (IAG), which launched a bid for BMI in November.

L-3 Communications, Fraport (owner of Frankfurt Airport and other airports), Lufthansa German Airlines, and Lufthansa Technik, with Airbus support, have teamed to jointly test a technology demonstrator, which might lead to a new way for aircraft to taxi. The group successfully tested a new method of ground operations using electric motors installed on an Airbus A320. It was the first known time electric motors were installed on the main landing gear of a commercial aircraft and used to provide all necessary aircraft ground movement.
