India’s Mahindra Aerospace inaugurated a 270,000-sq-ft aerostructures manufacturing plant last week at the Narsapura Industrial Estate near Bangalore. The plant opening accompanied an announcement by Mahindra that it signed a technology partnership agreement with Spanish Tier 1 supplier Aernnova Group, the first for Aernnova with an Indian aerostructures manufacturer.
The bid by Malaysia’s AirAsia to launch a low-fare airline in India with the Tata Group has hit some unexpected turbulence as Singapore Airlines prepares to launch a joint venture with the very same investors.
In an industry that is “all turnover with no leftover,” in the words of IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler, there is an increasing frustration being felt by carriers wanting to fly to India, but with the Indian government failing to indicate an interest in opening up routes.
Duke Aviation will be opening the first independent MRO facility in India. It
will be on Nagpur’s International Airport located within a special economic zone. Maharashtra Airport Development has a 25-percent stake in the project, slated to begin doing engine work next year. The plan calls for expansion into airframe maintenance and paint.
