Recent helicopter industry events have underscored the changing landscape of the MRO business, highlighting the fact that the helicopter market has been underserved, according to Adrienne Robinson, CEO of Associated Aviation in Vancouver, Canada. “The Helicopter Association of Canada [HAC] was an excellent show for us. The event was well attended with a good cross section of operators and vendors,” she told AIN.
Maintenance, repair and operations
Atlanta, Ga.-based Precision Aviation Group (PAG) has acquired Gardner Aviation Specialist. GAS, a Peachtree City, Ga.-based company, is an FAA repair station offering avionics installations, glass-panel upgrades, aircraft maintenance and MRO services. The acquisition allows PAG to expand the services it provides to customers operating fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. GAS operates out of a 35,000-sq-ft hangar on Falcon Field.
“We’re an FAA Part 145 third-party repair facility,” Marcellus Montalvo, president of Memphis-based InterSky Precision Instruments, told AIN. Montalvo said the 30-year-old company specializes in helping customers optimize their supply chain. “Aviation agency-certified independent suppliers provide expert repair services on high-mile or failed parts.
Air India will expand MRO capabilities at its Mumbai, India facility to include GE90 engine overhaul. The current schedule calls for the Mumbai facility to be certified for basic GE90 MRO by next year. According to the company, Air India plans to build a new MRO facility in Nagpur, India, that will include GE90 testing capabilities.
StandardAero has added PW100 engine maintenance, repair and overhaul capability in Winnipeg, Canada. Pratt & Whitney Canada has approved the site as a PW100 designated overhaul facility.
Embraer and EgyptAir Maintenance & Engineering have signed a five-year agreement designating the MRO an authorized service center for the Embraer E170/190 series. The Cairo-based carrier was already an established Embraer flight-hour pool program customer. Under the terms of the agreement the MRO will provide routine checks and scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for EgyptAir Express and third-party E-Jets.
Enterprise Jet Center evolved from Enterprise Products, a gas and oil company that opened a flight department in 1979. The latter’s original 30,000-sq-ft facility remains among the new company’s holdings on Hobby Airport.
“The general aviation industry has been hit hard for the past two years, resulting in massive downsizing in many areas. At Cessna, we are concerned this may draw attention from the need to replenish the work force,” Brad Thress, senior v-p of customer service for Cessna Aircraft, told AIN.
In early 2007, Air China and CFM International agreed to establish a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) joint venture. After three years of negotiations the two companies have cleared the final hurdle and have received Chinese government approval for the formation of Sichuan Services Aero Engines Maintenance Company (SSAMC), a 60-40 joint venture between Air China and CFM, located in Chengdu, China.
Lufthansa Technik, best known for its VIP completions of executive-configured Airbus and Boeing airliners, is also showcasing the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) side of its "VIP and executive jet solutions" at the MEBA show (Stand C305).
