Sargent Aerospace & Defense is investing in extensive new facilities and reorganizing itself to be ready for what it anticipates will be an upturn in the aerospace market during the second half of 2011. The 90-year-old U.S. company has initiated a strategic realignment plan resulting in the integration of its four main manufacturing operations for OEMs and others for aftermarket support services.

Identifying strengths and spinning them off into new profit centers is one of the key elements of corporate growth, and that is precisely what Jim Spinder has done at Atlantic Aero, where he is president and COO.
St. Louis-based JetCorp Technical Services announced it will be moving into a new facility also located on Spirit of St Louis Airport. It includes a 57,000-sq-ft hangar with shop space, a component and sheet metal work area, an avionics facility, and new maintenance and sales offices.
Business Jet Access focuses on the operational aspects of maintenance, according to general manager Brian Hoffman, who credits his stint as a mechanic and a crew chief in the Marines for his ability to consider how maintenance affects the operation of the aircraft.
The Ruag Group has streamlined its business aircraft maintenance facilities in response to a net loss in that sector of approximately $103 million for 2009 compared with a net profit of $50 million in 2008. However, Ruag Holding CEO Lukas Braunschweiler pointed out that the loss is allocated entirely to its aircraft component manufacturing division, where low-cost competition is exerting strong pressure on prices.
According to a study conducted by research firm AeroStrategy, the aviation maintenance industry in the U.S. employs 274,634 people and annually “the industry’s direct and indirect impact on the U.S. economy is $39 billion.” The study is based on information culled from government data last year.
With its recent certification as a Venezuelan repair station, Boca Raton-based Reliable Jet Center is adding another maintenance facility in South Florida.
Eurocopter and Pawan Hans Helicopters, an India-based operator, have signed two memoranda of understanding to create one training and one maintenance, repair and overhaul joint venture in the country this year. The MRO facility will be located “in a key Indian metro” and serve the local fleet of Dauphins. Pawan Hans is Eurocopter’s largest single customer in India and an approved Dauphin maintenance center. Eclipse Aerospace has located its first Platinum service center in Europe for Eclipse EA500 aircraft service, maintenance and modifications. Located in Istanbul, Turkey, Eclipse Aerospace General Aviation will provide maintenance, repair and overhaul support for Eclipse EA500 operators in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Republic Airport Farmingdale, N.Y.-based Talon Air, an aircraft management and charter operator, has expanded its services after receiving FAA certification of its FAR Part 145 repair station. The MRO offers Talon’s previously in-house maintenance services to the public. The new facility will focus on repairs, inspections and avionics installations for all classes of aircraft.
