Northwest Airlink subsidiary Express Airlines I will move to an all-regional-jet fleet and Minneapolis-based Mesaba Airlines will provide all Northwest Airlines’ Saab 340 service in Memphis, Tenn., under a new agreement that saw Mesaba reduce its service fees to Northwest by 10 percent during last year’s fourth quarter.

Big Sky Airlines will operate as a subsidiary of Mesaba Holdings by year-end if the Billings, Mont.-based Fairchild Metro III operator meets “certain labor conditions” set by its would-be parent company from Minneapolis. The proposed merger would create a new division within Mesaba Holdings, flying under an operating certificate and labor contracts separate from Mesaba Aviation.

Billings, Mont.-based Big Sky Airlines officially became part of the Mesaba Holdings stable early last month after Big Sky’s shareholders tendered some 90.9 percent of their outstanding shares of common stock in a $3.5 million offer that expired on November 27.

The Regional Airline Association (RAA) elected Republic Airways chairman, president and CEO Bryan Bedford to assume the chairmanship of its 2007-2008 Board of Directors at its November 27-28 fall meeting in Washington, D.C. Bedford succeeds MAIR Holdings CEO Paul Foley. The RAA also elected Trans States Holdings’ Rick Leach vice chairman of the board, SkyWest’s Chip Childs treasurer and Cape Air’s Dan Wolf secretary.

MAIR Holdings announced late last month that its Big Sky Airlines subsidiary will end all its Delta Connection service on the East Coast as of midnight, January 7. The company will then attempt to “transition” its Billings, Mont.-based operation to another airline, distribute any remaining cash to shareholders and completely liquidate sometime next year, said MAIR president Paul Foley.

Bankrupt Mesaba Airlines has asked a bankruptcy court judge to void contracts with its three labor unions after employees refused to agree to a 19.4-percent cut in payroll costs. In response, the airline’s pilots, flight attendants and mechanics staged protests at Minneapolis-St.

Mesaba Airlines expected to exit bankruptcy during the last week of April, following the approval of its reorganization plan by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Gregory Kishel. The Minneapolis-based Northwest Airlines affiliate filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2005, a month after the major airline itself filed for Chapter 11 and defaulted on its service contract payments to Mesaba.
