A Saab 340 operated by Silver Airways as a United Express flight landed on the 3,200-foot by 75-foot runway at Fairmont Municipal Airport-Frankman Field in West Virginia on August 7. Its intended destination was nearby West Virginia Central Airport, serving Bridgeport, W.Va. Cabs took all the passengers to Bridgeport. Silver Airways took over the service from Colgan Air on August 1.
The chief pilot of Colgan Air had expressed reservations about the qualifications of the captain of the Bombardier Q400 that crashed on approach to Buffalo, N.Y., less than six months prior to the Feb. 12, 2009 accident, according to internal e-mail records released by the law firm representing seven families of the victims.
Virginia’s Manassas Regional Airport, 30 miles from Washington, D.C., now offers U.S. Customs clearance services at the terminal building from 6 a.m. to midnight. Manassas has grown as an alternate airport for operators flying to the D.C. area, offering no landing fees, competitive fuel prices and two parallel runways, the longest 5,700 feet.
EMS operator Inova AirCare is doubling its fleet of aeromed helicopters this month in an effort to increase service to residents of Northern Virginia and the fast-growing Northern Neck area. It will also open a second base in the area.
At busy Manassas Regional Airport near Washington, D.C., FlightWorks has opened its third hangar/office facility for charter and aircraft management customers. Billed as private and secure for aircraft owners, the $3.5 million Manassas FlightWorks facility features 30,000 sq ft of hangar space, 10,000 sq ft for offices and 11 private garages where aircraft management customers can park their cars during trips.
