Made up primarily of operators at Hanscom Field (BED) outside Boston, a new local business aviation group has formed. According to NBAA regional representative Dean Saucier, the group has been active in dealing with local political and economic issues, as well as issues relating to ATC. Massport, the port authority that controls BED, also operates Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
Stockholm City Airport is set to get its first purpose-built FBO when Grafair Jet Center opens early next month. The facility will consist of a 2,800-sq-ft, two-story terminal building and an 8,600-sq-ft hangar connected by some offices for maintenance staff. The terminal will include a lounge, flight planning offices and a range of FBO services.
Rectrix Aerodrome Centers is attempting something that has bedeviled many an FBO over the years, trying to force an airport’s municipal owners to allow FBOs to pump jet fuel. Rectrix built a new FBO at Barnstable Municipal Airport-Boardman/Polando Field in Hyannis, Mass., in 2005 and has been fighting with the town of Hyannis and the airport commission that runs the airport ever since.
Aviation One, now based at Plymouth (Mass.) Municipal Airport (PYM), offers fractional leases on a CitationJet and a Piper Seneca V piston twin. Founded in 1997, Aviation One plans to provide low-cost regional transportation for clients whose needs include both jet travel and relatively short-range trips that are more economically feasible in the Seneca.
The Air Line Pilots Association, the union that represents most of the nation’s airline pilots, has endorsed Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) for President.
“You have to work at it every day. The changes don’t come in waves, but in tiny increments,” Philippe Crevier said about the FBO business. He spoke to AIN on his cellphone from his family’s vacation house.
Massport, which operates Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Hanscom Field (BED) in Bedford, Mass., has instituted a new aircraft operating fee schedule at BED that includes a night landing surcharge of $329 for any aircraft landing between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Other new fees include a landing fee of $1.50 per 1,000 pounds and a customs fee of $150 to $310, depending on aircraft weight.
Bids are invited from “qualified persons or firms” to design, develop and operate a new FBO facility at Boston Logan International Airport, which is currently served by Signature Flight Support. As part of its request for proposals (RFP), the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) will host a pre-submission conference and site tour on February 10 where copies of the draft lease and operating agreements will be available.

Boston Hanscom Field may yet get a third FBO to compete against Jet Aviation and Signature Flight Support. Crosspoint, which in May 2005 won the bid to build a new FBO on vacant property used by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for research, elected not to build, so Hanscom operator Massport (Massachusetts Port Authority) plans to reopen the bidding process.
