Malaysian Airlines has signed a deal with Canada’s Viking Air to take six new 19-seat Twin Otter Series 400s for use in scheduled service by its regional subsidiary MASwings. Viking plans to deliver all the airplanes by the end of next year.

A flurry of commercial announcements in the regional- and small-narrowbody aircraft sectors came across the wires last week, led by a firm order on Thursday for 10 Bombardier CSeries CS300s from Latvian carrier airBaltic. The deal, potentially worth $1.57 billion at list prices, included so-called purchase rights on 10 more of the airplanes and represented a conversion of a letter of intent signed at this year’s Farnborough International airshow.

EADS, mas to create regional MRO MAS Aerospace Engineering (MAE), a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysian Airline System (MAS), and EADS SECA, a Pratt & Whitney-designated aircraft engine repair and overhaul unit of the EADS Group, plan to establish a joint venture company just outside Kuala Lumpur to support and maintain regional airplanes powered by PW100-series turboprops, the companies announced last month.

India’s fast-growing Kingfisher Airlines took delivery of its seventeenth ATR 72-500 last month. The Bangalore-based carrier holds a firm contract for 35 of the twin turboprops, all equipped with ATR’s “Elegance” cabin.
