Williams leads turbofans, Honeywell tops t-props
A five-month-old boy was killed in an accident at Alicante Airport (LEAL) in southeast Spain after his mother left him alone on a baggage conveyor belt that she apparently believed to be inactive at the time. An initial review of airport security-camera footage suggested the conveyor was activated by the weight of the baby being placed upon it.
On September 12, Europe’s EADS unexpectedly assigned a schedule and a market segment to its “E-Thrust” hybrid propulsion concept, which was revealed at the Paris Air Show this year with Rolls-Royce. The “E-Airbus,” under its new moniker, is to enter into service in 2030 as a regional aircraft, probably a 70- to 100-seater. The announcement came during a conference organized by the French government in Paris about its industrial policy.
Elliptical Mobile Solutions (EMS) has launched Zero Shock Seating (ZSS), a spinoff company that is expected to “dramatically improve comfort, safety and overall performance” for various modes of transport, including aviation.
ZSS is a startup company based in Chandler, Ariz., with exclusive rights to negotiate ownership of a patented, semi-active suspension system. The technology substantially eliminates shock experienced by passengers in all vehicles by automatically adapting to both the driver’s body weight and changing levels of shock and vibration.
Engine maker Pratt & Whitney Canada (Stand 2009) is here at LABACE to highlight its engine support capabilities, which are primarily handled through the local service center at Sorocaba in the São Paulo region. Established in 1999, the Sorocaba facility is part of the global PWC support network, reporting to the West Virginia overhaul and service center, but is particularly involved in supporting the more than 2,000 PWC engines that are operational in Brazil.
Pilatus said here at LABACE yesterday that it will deliver three more of these PC-6 Turbo Porters to Brazil this year, having delivered only one since certification in the country in 2011. The Swiss manufacturer is emphasizing the single turboprop’s short takeoff and landing performance, pointing out that it can operate more economically than helicopters and with superior payload. Maximum payload is 1.2 metric tons, maximum range is 870 nm and this can be achieved operating out of an airstrip shorter than 1,500 feet (440 meters).
Canadian company Vector Aerospace is in the planning stages for its first maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) subsidiary and service center in Latin American. Senior executives from the company, which already has MRO facilities in 21 countries on six continents, along with its local representatives are at LABACE (Stand 3005) to discuss their services with local operators.
Electroair’s electronic ignition system is now a factory option for Aviat Aircraft’s Husky utility piston single-engine airplane. Electroair added the Husky to its Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approved model list just before EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, according to Michael Kobylik, president of the Howell, Mich.-based company. Electroair is working with Aviat on certification of the electronic ignition system for six-cylinder Lycomings in the Pitts Special and in Aviat’s Eagle biplane kit.
The engineering team at Gap-Tallard, France-based Beringer Wheels & Brakes has devised a new tailwheel design to help prevent ground loops in tailwheel-equipped airplanes. The patented “tailwheel with double pivot” essentially is a lockable tailwheel that is steerable while in the locked position. Beringer also announced that it has received a supplemental type certificate for a complete Cirrus SR20/22 replacement wheel and brake system with Beringer’s anti-lock inline regulator (ALIR) anti-skid braking feature.
GE has completed its acquisition of Turin, Italy-based Avio’s aviation components and systems business for $3.4 billion. Renamed Avio Aero, the new division furthers GE’s participation and expertise in the areas of mechanical transmission systems, low-pressure turbines, combustion technology and automation systems. Avio Aero has content on several GE engines, ranging from the CT7/T700 turboshaft series for helicopters to the GE90 and GEnx turbofan engines for airliners.
