More than 100 hours of testing on a full-scale PW1000G PurePower engine core has so far validated Pratt & Whitney's performance goals for its new generation of commercial jet engines, the company announced today. The core has also demonstrated “excellent” starting and operability characteristics, according to Pratt & Whitney.

Yesterday the NTSB held a public meeting to issue the probable cause of a Learjet 60 runway overrun accident on Sept. 19, 2008. Both pilots and two of four passengers were killed when the Learjet, operated by Global Exec Aviation, overran Runway 11 during a rejected takeoff at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina. One key issue in the accident was tire pressure.
Start-up engine manufacturer Price Induction is about to begin endurance testing on its 575-pound-thrust Dgen 380 turbofan by the end of this month. A new architecture on the core engine was validated in December for better performance after 50 hours of testing, a spokesperson from the France-based company told AIN. The A6 standard of the full engine, which incorporates the core changes, has run about 20 hours since.
Larry Shiembob, general manager of Timken’s Aerospace Aftermarket Solutions in Mesa, Ariz., told AIN the company is enhancing its overhaul and repair operations by adding 100 new replacement parts to its portfolio of FAA-approved parts and assemblies. “We are sharpening our focus on engine overhaul and repair, and we expect customers to benefit from that emphasis,” he said.
Duncan Aviation advises that all operators of Honeywell engines that do not run them frequently and want to keep them off the Damaged Engine List should spool them to N1 rotation speed once a month and make a logbook entry. Duncan also said engines dormant longer than six months require fuel system preservation.
US Aviation in Denton, Texas, is the first FBO in the U.S. to install stainless steel-lined fuel tanks in its fuel farm. Traditional fuel storage tanks use an epoxy inner liner, and this liner “has a tendency to break down,” according to Jeff Soules, the FBO’s senior v-p and general manager. Benefits of the stainless-steel liners include no initial startup problems or chips, flaking or biological disintegration of the epoxy, he said.
