Gulfstream (Booth 5129) filed a patent this week for a new undercarriage arrangement that significantly reduces the amount of noise created when the aircraft flies with the landing gear deployed. As engines have become ever quieter, the aerodynamic noise created by disturbed airflow around the aircraft itself makes up an increasing proportion of the overall noise signature. In landing configuration one of the biggest culprits is the landing gear, and the nosewheel in particular.
H+S Aviation and Dallas Airmotive, both BBA Aviation companies (Booth 4246), have received the first RR300 engines under their recently awarded authorized maintenance repair and overhaul center agreement with Rolls-Royce. “The recent EASA certification of the [Robinson Helicopter] R66 will undoubtedly drive growth in Europe and we have responded by ramping up our support capabilities,” said Mark Taylor, managing director of H+S Aviation, also referring to BBA’s expertise with the Rolls-Royce M250.
Most activity in business jet engine research and development is taking place for business aircraft at the top end of the size range. Snecma (Booth 5515) is developing the Silvercrest for the Dassault Falcon 5X, while Pratt & Whitney Canada (Booth 3834) has readied a new variant of the PW307 for the newly revealed Falcon 8X. The Québec-based manufacturer is also running the PW800, a demonstrator in the 10,000- to 20,000-lb-thrust range. GE (Booth 5551) is working on its Passport engine for Bombardier’s Global 7000 and 8000.
The aviation program at Kansas State University Salina is working with Price Induction to develop a curriculum using the French company’s new virtual engine test bench that simulates the DGen 380 lightweight gas turbine engine. Price Induction has given the aviation department full use of the test bench for one year to generate an education model that could be used in other academic settings.
The Turbomeca Arrius 2R turboshaft made its first ground run on April 29 at the company’s test facility in Bordes, France. The derivative engine, which is in the 500-shp class, will power the in-development Bell 505 Jet Ranger X light single. The Arrius 2R features Fadec and a 3,000-hour time between overhaul. Certification is expected late next year.
A new 30,000-sq-ft composite processing and repair center will be developed within StandardAero Components’ existing 250,000-sq-ft MRO facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is intended to meet the growing market demand for the development of new composite repairs for aircraft and ground-based engine hardware and aircraft structures.
Dassault Aviation joined the Falcon 5X’s main center fuselage subassemblies–the front and rear lower subassemblies and the upper subassembly–in mid-April, the company announced on Thursday. This is a milestone for the 5,200-nm wide-cabin twinjet, which the French OEM expects to fly in the first half of next year and enter service in 2017.
Delta Private Jets has opened a new 40,000-sq-ft comprehensive maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at its headquarters at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
The EASA has certified the redesigned vertical bevel gear shaft for the Airbus Helicopters EC225, which has suffered in-flight failures and a nine-month grounding in 2012 and 2013. Manufacturing of the redesigned gear shaft is under way for production aircraft and for retrofits, and installations for both applications are slated to begin in the second half of this year.
Boca Raton, Fla.-based VAS Aero Services has named Tommy Hughes as chief commercial officer. Hughes, formerly senior vice president for sales and marketing for the company, is responsible for global assets and repair services, in addition to worldwide sales. During a 20-plus-year career in engine MRO services and sales, and before VAS, Hughes worked with Delta Air Lines tech ops, where he led engine maintenance and test cell operations for that airline and its third-party customers.
