Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings has developed an epoxy primer formulated without hexavalent chrome, an environmentally harmful substance and a suspected carcinogen. The low volatile organic compound (VOC), two-component, corrosion-inhibitive epoxy primer is the only chrome-free combination primer/surfacer available to the aerospace market, according to Sherwin-Williams technical director Tim Scheuer.

According to published reports supported by on-site witnesses, the Venezuelan National Guard is still holding in custody a Portuguese-registered Citation X seized last October. The anti-drug command reported it found about 880 pounds of cocaine on board the business jet, which reportedly had flown from Mexico and stopped in Caracas for fuel before a planned transatlantic flight to South Africa.

The FAA is proposing to amend airman medical standards so that refusing to submit to a required drug or alcohol test carries the same penalty as failing a test–revocation of an airman medical certificate. The same penalty awaits a pilot with an alcohol test result of 0.04 or greater. Comments on the proposal are due March 14. For more information, call the FAA at (202) 267-8693.

Regulation may be in the air for the cabins of commercial aircraft, though it is unclear which is more infectious: airborne particles or hysterical legislation. On April 6, the House subcommittee on aviation, chaired by John Mica (R-Fla.), discussed efforts to prevent a pandemic–an epidemic across international boundaries affecting masses–and debated whether the problem can best be addressed through legislation or common sense.

AIN has confirmed that Franklin Rodriguez, the U.S. Air National Guard pilot arrested April 12 for smuggling the so-called love drug Ecstasy into the U.S. aboard a C-5A Galaxy, was a Beechjet captain at that time for Flight Options. The fractional provider declined comment, citing employee-employer confidentiality.
